One dead after pickup collides with garbage truck outside Rockwell

ROCKWELL – One person died as a result of a two-vehicle crash Thursday near Rockwell.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place Thursday, October 11 at about 6:44 AM near 170th Street and Quail Avenue, north of Rockwell. A garbage truck was eastbound on 170th Street as a red Ford F-150 was northbound on Quail Avenue. The two vehicles entered the intersection at the same time, and the pickup was struck on the passenger side. The garbage truck ended up in the north ditch of 170th Street while the pickup ended up in the south ditch. The driver of the pickup truck, 28-year-old Christopher Wayne Light, was killed in the collision.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, Rockwell Fire and EMS, Mason City EMS, Iowa DOT, Tony’s Towing and the DNR.

  1. How does an eastbound garbage truck strike the passenger side of a northbound pickup? Must of been an English pickup. Regardless, a terrible tragedy.

  2. I live less than a mile from the crash site. I cross this exact intersection several times daily.

    PLEASE SLOW DOWN ON GRAVEL AT EVERY SINGLE INTERSECTION. This guy’s poor wife. There is zero time to react if a vehicle enters the intersection.

    Slowing down isn’t an inconvenience. It will save your life.
