Motorcade in Charles City announced to honor deputy who passed away in Florida

CHARLES CITY – A fallen law enforcement officer will be honored with a motorcade in Charles City this weekend.

The Floyd county sheriff’s office said today that this Sunday, September 16 at at 12:45 PM, there will be a motorcade of EMS, fire and law enforcement vehicles.  This motorcade will honor Ben Zirbel who died in the line of duty in Florida in August.  Zirbel is from Charles City and his father was Chief of Police for for the Charles City police department for years.

“We will be going from Kmart on South Grand to the 1:00 PM memorial service (open to the public) at the Elks on Clark St. The public is encouraged to show their support and respect for Deputy Zirbel and his family by standing along the motorcade route,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

On August 22, the Clay County, Florida, Sheriff announced that Deputy Sheriff Ben Zirbel died from injuries he sustained from a traffic crash on August 19, 2018.  Reportedly, Zirbel was riding his sheriff’s office motorcycle around 5 p.m. that evening when a vehicle pulling a utility trailer turned in front of him, causing a collision.  The 12-year veteran was transported to a local hospital.  Deputy Zirbel was a Charles City High School graduate and son of former Charles City Police Chief Jim Zirbel.
