Waterloo woman accused of two murders after house burns

WATERLOO – A Waterloo woman faces two murder charges after a house recently burned.

On Monday, August 20th, 2018 Waterloo Police arrested 42-year-old Denise Susanna Obrien on 2 counts of 1st Degree Murder. The charges stem from a fire in the early morning hours of April 22nd, 2018 at 536 Dawson Ave, Waterloo. Ashley Smith age 32, and Jaykwon Sallis age 9, both died as the result of that fire.

Obrien was arrested on April 23rd, 2018 for Violation of No Contact Order and has remained in custody since that time on a variety of criminal charges. The No Contact Order was issued on April 13th and was the result of Obrien being involved in vandalism at 536 Dawson Street. On April 24th Obrien admitted to being at 536 Dawson and being involved in an argument. She remains jailed at this time, pending court appearances.
