NIACC men shoot 313 at national tournament

FOLEY, Ala. – The NIACC men’s golf team shot a tournament-best 313 at the NJCAA Division II national tournament Wednesday Glenlakes Golf Club.

Heading into the Thursday’s final day of the four-day tournament, the Trojans are at 323-334-313 – 970.

“The guys did a great job of bouncing back (Wednesday) after a difficult day (Tuesday),” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “They had to deal with a rain/lightning delay and a downpour for about 10 minutes but hung in there and we put up a respectable score.”

The 313 on Wednesday was the second best team round by a Chris Frenz coached team at the national tournament. The 2011 team shot a 310 on day three at nationals.

The 313 was also the second best round of the season for the Trojans, who shot a season-best 309 during the first day of the regional tournament.

On Wednesday, the Trojans were led by sophomore Josh Schaefer with a 37-38 – 75. Schaefer has a three-round total of 81-80-75 – 236.

Freshman Ben Boerjan recorded his third straight score in the 70s on Wednesday with a 38-40 – 78. He has a three-day total of 75-77-78 – 230.

“Josh Schaefer and Ben Boerjan have been really steady for us this week,” Frenz said. “It was good to see some putts go in for Josh.”

Also for the Trojans, sophomore Devin Koob shot a 41-39 – 80; sophomore Anthony Emanuel shot a 38-42 – 80 and sophomore Jordan Voves shot a 44-48 – 92.

“Anthony lipped out a putt on the 18th hole or he would have been in the 70s,” Frenz said.

The tournament concludes on Thursday.

“One more day,” Frenz said. “We need to show some heart and pride to finish the season.

“Not many schools/players can say they’ve played in a national championship.”
