UPDATE: Fatality reported in Worth county accident after tractor collides with train

RURAL WORTH COUNTY – A tractor and a train collided Tuesday morning, and at least one person has died as a result.

Shortly before 8:00 AM, Tuesday morning, Worth County rescue was dispatched to 350th and Ulmus Avenue, just northeast of Plymouth, to a train and tractor collision. One person was reported unresponsive; Worth County Sheriff Dan Tank confirms to NIT that there was a fatality.

“State Patrol was on scene and that family was trying to be contacted,” sheriff Fank told NIT.

The collision was on the south side of the track with the tractor and trailer mostly on the west side of the ditch. Most of the damage seemed to be to the trailer, a person at the scene tells NIT.

Worth County authorities and Iowa State Patrol were on hand to help at the scene.

The accident caused Highway 9 to be blocked by the train for at least an hour.

At 9:00 they were attempting to detach the trailer from the tractor and a wrecker and flatbed was being called.

Later Wednesday, the Iowa State Patrol had still not released the name of the deceased, but did say, “A tractor pulling a chemical sprayer, heading south bound on Ulmus Road in Worth county failed to yield at the railroad crossing a train heading north east struck the sprayer and drug the tractor and sprayer several yards the operator of the tractor was ejected and died from his injuries.”

Investigation into the crash continues.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Worth County Sheriff, Manly Police, Mason City EMS, and Plymouth Fire.

Don’t mess with a train. You will lose every time.

probably the first of many farm related accidents. With the weather the farmers are in a hurry to get the crops in and probably working to many hours to do so. This is when accidents happen.
