MASON CITY – A man who once threw a dog into a burning Mason City house on purpose is accused of toting meth for the third time this year.
Cerro Gordo county deputies conducted a traffic stop on the evening of Friday, December 22, just before midnight, near 12th Street NW and Washington Avenue. After an investigation, the driver, 29-year-old Bachig Cornelius, who police list as homeless, was arrested for possession of meth 3rd offense (class D felony), unlawful possession of prescription pills, and driving revoked. He remains in the Cerro Gordo county jail this weekend.
Cornelius was also accused of meth possession in Mason City this year in two separate arrests – one in July and one in June. The July charge was dismissed, court records show. The charge from June netted Cornelius 60 days in jail.
Cornelius was charged with a slew of crimes back on June 17, 2012, when he lit a North End house on fire as he committed a domestic assault and even threw a dog into the fire, causing it to perish. He was later guilty of felony arson, domestic abuse, animal torture, and more. He was given a 10-year prison sentence for arson and appears to have been sent to an Iowa prison for a short amount of time in October of 2012.
