MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health and the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Cerro Gordo County are celebrating the Great American Smoke Out (GASO), Thursday, November 16, 2017.

The Partnership encourages everyone in the community to participate in the event. If you or someone you know uses any form of nicotine, from the old fashioned conventional cigarette to the new emerging products, give the Great American Smoke Out a try. Electronic smoking is still smoking nicotine is highly addictive and very dangerous in any form. The Great American Smoke Out is a day set aside to help you put down the cigarettes, chew or other nicotine and quit for the day. Individual participants are invited to stop at the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health this week to pick up their FREE Quit Kit – a bag of ideas and tools to tame the cravings.

The benefits are vast and range from improved finances and personal relationships, to an enhanced quality of life. Tobacco users will immediately feel the health benefits. Within 20 minutes nicotine users in general could drop their heart rate and blood pressure back into a normal zone. Within 12 hours, smoker’s carbon monoxide levels in the blood will also return to normal. Quitting may be the single most effective thing you can do to improve your life expectancy.

The Partnership and Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health support tobacco cessation and prevention throughout the year:
Tobacco-free worksite, childcare, and homes sample policies to get you started
Technical assistance to implement policies
Customizable tobacco cessation challenges for worksites
Quit Bag Starter Kits (while supplies last)
Useful tobacco education models, FREE to check out and use for your wellness programming
Trainings for medical providers to better assist patients who want to quit

Whether the Great American Smoke Out is the only day you quit or the first day to a tobacco free life there are resources that will help along the way. Start by reaching out. I reminded my friend on his way out of the café for a cigarette that it was smoke out day. He said that’s where he was going. Out for a smoke !!

I like the casino in worth county – gave up buying cigs – I just stop at the casino and breath deeply for about 30 minutes and leave – its on my way home so I figured I saved hundreds last year – PS – take your clothes off when you arrive home and breath into them later for more aroma – works every time.

Smoking is a terrible addiction. Once you finally get threw the habit and quit, You will remember that date forever. I quit Nov 18 before there was such a thing as smoke out day. Now there are some who go back to that terrible addiction and are still hooked. Sad.

Do yourself a favor and quit if you still smoke. It costs big money these days to smoke and why kill yourself over it.

The city should post signs about this on the windows at the bus stop in central park. That would maybe eliminate some of the cigarette butts around the building. Someone will have to be there to explain what the signs mean to those that can’t read. Central park is nice, a show place for mason city, until you get to the bus stop, pathetic.

Post this on the windows at the bus depot in central park, maybe it will help stop all the cigarette butts on the ground. Someone might have to be there to explain it to those that can’t read. Central park is nice, and a showcase for the city, until you get to the bus depot, pathetic.
