MASON CITY – A former daycare operator accused of heinous sex crimes against a very young child in Mason City will stand trial in December, and his ex says she was picked on in jail and called “white and fluffy”.
Tawny Marie Symonds, age 31, was arrested in December of 2016 and charged with sexual abuse in the second degree, a class B felony. She was also charged with class C felony assault and class D felony child endangerment.
These charges were brought as a result of a joint Iowa Department of Human Services investigation with the Mason City Police Department that began in February of 2016 at a residence in Mason City, where Symonds operated an in-home daycare.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation also assisted in the investigation.
Symonds ran the daycare out of her home and allegedly committed the crime there in February of 2016; just a month earlier, she wrote on Facebook that “Friday nights at my house are weird,” apparently describing life at the home with her former husband, Quinn Symonds.
Quinn Symonds divulged numerous alleged details to NIT about the possibly sordid crime his ex is accused of; out of respect for the alleged victim, NIT will withhold those details from publication. He did say that when Tawny Symonds was first jailed for this crime, “she was picked on and they called her white bread because she’s so white and Fluffy.”
He earlier claimed “Tawny found a part time job at the redemption center in Charles City.”
Earlier, police told NIT “The defendant’s day care was a licensed day care. The other children were interviewed. It does not appear that there are any additional victims at this time.”
The Globe Gazette earlier reported that “The Iowa Department of Human Services alleged in a Feb. 12 complaint that Symonds had violated a safety plan by allowing someone at her day care/residence, 696 13th St. S.E., that she had previously agreed would not be in the home. The document does not specify who the person was or why his presence would have violated the rules. That man is not suspected of harming any children,” a police officer told the Globe.
Later in December, Symonds was released from jail after her defense counsel and state prosecutors came to an agreement. Symonds was released with supervision to the custody of the Department of Correctional Services under the following terms:
1. The defendant shall be fitted with a GPS ankle monitor prior to being released from jail; a. The parties acknowledge that DCS has advised that they may need up and until January 4, 2017, to schedule said fitting;
2. The defendant shall reside at the agreed upon residence in Charles City, Iowa;
3. The defendant shall NOT reside with or be in the presence of minor children;
4. The defendant shall comply with any and all requirements or restrictions put in place for her supervision with the Department of Correctional Services – including, but not limited to check-in frequency/dates/times, curfew; The Defendant shall be under the pretrial supervision of the Department of Correctional Services. The Defendant shall not leave the state of Iowa without prior permission of the Court.
In February of this year, Symonds entered a not-guilty plea. Two trial dates were set and then postponed. She is now scheduled for for a jury trial on December 11 on charges of: second-degree sex abuse; assault – penetration of gentalia or anus with object; child endangerment – bodily injury.

Wow. This is very damning for Mr. Quinn, and his brother Will. It draws into question the deeper ethics and character of all persons involved. What does his ex wife, and her charge have to do with his brother? Anyone that knows William Symonds, knows that he is a good person that has fought locally for what he believes in.

I would have to agree with you on this. I have talked to Will and found him to be a intelligent young man who is trying to take a interest in his city. He is nothing like his brother Quinn. Just goes to show you can’t pick your relatives.
