Clear Lake police seek help in catching magic marker vandal

CLEAR LAKE – Someone with too much time on their hand is causing damage to businesses in Clear Lake using a permanent black magic marker and spray paint.

The Clear Lake Police Department is investigating 10 reports of vandalism that occurred over the weekend (Friday 10/6 through Monday 10/9/17).

Nine out of the ten incidents were graffiti and appear to have been completed by the same person(s). They have similar elements such as; language, style, drawings, and message. The damage was done using a permanent-type marker or spray paint. No threats were made. The other report of vandalism was physical damage to an exterior door that appears unrelated.

Of the nine graffiti incidents, the damage was:
· On exterior doors and walls to three businesses

· Inside three public restrooms maintained by the City of Clear Lake

· the common area in an apartment building

· On the exterior of one vehicle

Citizens say Lake Coffee & ice cream/ Subway hit in the halls and restroom. Also, the side door to the mirror reporter and alley behind and the alleys behind Unique Boutique.

Costs for repairing the damage continue to be compiled. Preliminary estimates total over $3,000.00, which classifies it as a Criminal Mischief 2nd, a Class D Felony. However this could change as costs of repairs become known.

If anyone has information regarding these incidents, or to report newly discovered damage, please contact the Clear Lake Police Department at 641-357-2186.

A similar crime was recently reported in Mason City, where a suspect took a permanent black magic marker and damaged the front of a building.
