Northern Iowa man jailed after he allegedly holds shotgun to woman’s head

RUTHVEN, IOWA – A Northern Iowa man is behind bars today after he allegedly held a shot gun to a woman’s head and then shot up a car she was riding in.

On October 2, 2017 at 3:14 AM, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received two 911 calls of a male subject walking down Highway 18 near Ruthven, Iowa with a gun. Deputies were unable to locate a male subject walking on foot but did observe a vehicle leaving the area of the reported suspect. Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 3600 block of 380th Street. Deputies were able to determine that a passenger in that vehicle, Challer Douglas Wadsley, age 23 of Spencer, was the suspect that had been in possession of the gun.

During the investigation, it was determined that Wadsley had been a passenger inside of a vehicle driven by Courtney Renee Opheim, age 21 of Whittemore, Iowa, when he assaulted Opheim. Wadsley had been in possession of a 20 gauge shotgun while inside the vehicle and allegedly held the shotgun to Opheim’s head. Opheim was able to pull her vehicle over in the 3700 Block of Highway 18 and Wadsley exited the vehicle with the shotgun. As Opheim started to pull her vehicle away, Wadsley fired the shotgun at Opheim’s vehicle and struck it on the rear passenger side bumper.

Following an 8-hour search in a 4 mile stretch of ditch on Highway 18, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was able to find the 20 gauge shotgun and 2 spent rounds that were found in the area of the shotgun. Subsequently, Wadsley was arrested on charges of Attempted Murder, a Class “B” Felony; Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, a Class “C” Felony; Domestic Abuse Assault, an aggravated misdemeanor; False Imprisonment, a Serious Misdemeanor and Public Intoxication, a Simple Misdemeanor. Wadsley was transported to the Palo Alto County Jail without incident to await his initial appearance before a magistrate.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Emmetsburg Police Department, the Algona Police Department and K-9 Jet, and the Division of Criminal Investigation.
