NIACC men place second at Griak, Jacques wins individual title

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 6 (NJCAA Division I) NIACC men’s cross country team placed second at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational Division III race on steamy Saturday morning with 80 points.

NIACC freshman Brian Jacques was the individual champion in a time of 27 minutes, 7 seconds on the 8-kilometer Les Bolstad Golf Course. Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Lucas Weber was second in 27:49.

Jacques is the first NIACC runner to win an individual title at the Griak Invitational, which is one of the largest cross country races in the United States.

NIACC’s Wal Khat was fifth in the Division II race in 2016 and the Trojans’ Trent Smith was ninth in the Division II race in 2012.

Wisconson-Oskkosh was the Griak Division III team champion with 35 points. Hawkeye CC was third with 83 points and Concordia-Moorhead was fourth with 91 points.

Other counting scores for the Trojans were Blake Keller, who sixth in 28:26, David Carter was 24th in 29:24, Jacob Hansen was 26th in 29:33 and Canyon Kuhlmann was 29th in 29:55.

Also for the Trojans, Logan Dalbeck was 36th (30:30), Daniel Hennigar was 43rd (30:48), Tyler Crawford was 52nd (31:30) and Tyson Stromer was 56th (32:11).

The NIACC women placed 12th in the Division III race with 352 points. Freshman Julia Dunlavey led the Lady Trojans with a 73rd-place finish in 26:48 on the 6K course.

Also for the Lady Trojans, Amy Fullerton was 101st (27:49), Rebekah Larson was 136th (29:55), Allison Steahr was 144th (31:07), Maddison Shupe was 150th (31:59) and Anna Frisch was 156h (35:32).

The NIACC men and women return to action Oct. 7 at the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational.
