MASON CITY – Peter Veal has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus an additional quarter century for the murders of two Mason City residents last year.

Peter Veal murdered Caleb Christensen and Melinda Kavars on November 17, 2016 at a Mason City house, 1620 North Hampshire. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Judge Rustin Davenport ruled Veal competent to stand trial on May 23 after Veal was mentally evaluated.  His trial was held this summer in Fort Dodge. A jury returned a guilty verdict and awaited sentencing.

Days after the killings, the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted autopsies and determined that 54-year-old Melinda Kavars died of a single gunshot wound to the neck and chest. Also, 37-year-old Caleb Christensen was found to have died of multiple sharp force injuries.

Enjoy prison you murderer!

It’s about time. This P.O.S. costs the taxpayers enough with his worthless appeals.

This was his original trial, conviction and sentencing.
No appeals yet, dumbass.

Are you really that stupid? He has appealed three times so far. That is why he was sentenced. He lost all of his appeals.

His defense filed motions and a change of venue request, not appeal.
Definition of appeal:
“law :a legal proceeding by which a case is brought before a higher court for review of the decision of a lower court”
No appeals yet as this was the lower court, but there probably will be an appeal.
LVS, you are such an idiotic old geezer, you’re just too stupid to realize how stupid that you really are.

Same damn difference. It took up the courts time for no reason and cost money.

Not quite LVS.
It just proves once again that your are an ignorant fool without even a rudimentary knowledge of the law.
Or knowledge of anything else for that matter.
Just a clueless and illiterate numbnuts.
Give it up stupid old man, you’re just one of those few people that instead of garnering knowledge & wisdom with age, actually regressed.
You were born a dumbass, lived your life as a dumbass and will die a dumbass.

This guy will commit suicide in prison. Just wait and watch. He is a coward.

Mr. Veals suicide would be the most financially satisfying outcome for the state. Iowa already supports his sister (for 20+ years).

too bad Hannibal Lectur couldnt spend the week end with him.

I prefer FARGO – run him through the wood chipper !

Good ! Would rather have watched a slow death by hanging – you know poopy pants / shakin and jivin.

Didn’t his sister stab a lady 60 times back when She Was 14. . Lady trying to help The runaway veal, And This Is how She Thanks Her. Any more Veals Around, Or All In Prison Now.

Yeah hopefully the genetics have been exterminated. She indeed is also serving a life sentence for murder.

There’s more. Just a matter of time until they enter the prison system.

Good riddance to another violent scofflaw… Actually, he should get the death penalty….

Cases without the death penalty cost $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. Maintaining each death row prisoner costs taxpayers $90,000 more per year than a prisoner in general population.

Good riddance to another violent scoflaw Actually he should get the death penalty

Your numbers are obviously flawed. I agree that it costs more to kill an inmate than life imprisonment but the cost of execution is far more substantial than that. The problem lies within the appeals and not the actual housing of the inmate.
