Police seek Des Moines man who skipped plea hearing in Mason City drunk driving case

MASON CITY – A Des Moines man who was caught drunk driving in Mason City has skipped his plea hearing in court and is now sought on an arrest warrant.

Police stopped a suspected drunk driver Monday evening, October 24, 2016 in Mason City after a driving complaint. An officer located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at 19th Street and South Federal Avenue.

During the stop and investigation, the driver was found to have an open container of alcohol and was suspected of of being under the influence. As a result, 42-year-old Wayne E. Morrissey of Des Moines was arrested for operating while intoxicated and open container of alcohol. He was taken to the county jail and later released, pending a court date.

After being appointed a taxpayer-funded public defender, Morrissey entered a not-guilty plea. Prior to trial, Morrissey and his lawyer called for a plea deal and he was supposed to appear in court on May 9. However, he failed to appear, leading to an arrest warrant. He is still at-large at this time.
