Fire department gives update on weekend fire at Mason City’s Shalom Tower 2

MASON CITY – Evacuations were necessary this weekend due to a fire at the Shalom Tower 2 in Mason City, the fire department says.

The Mason City Fire Department responded to an automatic alarm for an apartment fire at Shalom Tower 2, 321 4th St. N.E. at 5:56 am on 4-8-2017. The fire was in an apartment on the 5th floor. The fire was controlled by the buildings fire sprinkler system.

Fire Department staff connected hose lines to the standpipe in the stairwell of building for firefighting operations and finished extinguishing the fire. Search and rescue was performed on the 6th and 7th floor by additional fire crews as the fire extinguishment crew was extinguishing the fire. Fire crew cleared the 5th, 6th and 7th floors of occupants, and then cleared the remaining floors. Mason City Fire Department staff along with Mason City Police Department staff assisted residents down the stairwell and to safety.

Residents were evacuated to Shalom Tower 1 and Good Shepherd assisted resident with food and drinks while occupants were evacuated.

The fire was contained to the bed and bedding in the apartment with smoke damage throughout the apartment. There was little smoke damage in the rest of building.

North Iowa Cert team assisted with evacuations of the building occupants and moving occupants to a safe location.

The fire could have been far worse had it not been held in check by the fire sprinkler system and the quick actions of Fire Department Personnel along with all Emergency Responders. There were no life threating injuries to occupants of the building and residents were able to return to their apartment later that morning or by early afternoon.
