MASON CITY – A death occurred Thursday at the Cerro Gordo county jail, and state officials are investigating.
On March 23, 2017, at approximately 4:25 AM, a Cerro Gordo County inmate was found unresponsive in his detox cell. Jail staff started life saving measures, Mason City Fire Department Medics responded to the scene and transported the man to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa where he was pronounced dead.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was requested to investigate the death. An autopsy is scheduled at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa.
No further information will be released at this time. Sheriff Kevin Pals tells NIT an update to this case could come as early as Saturday.
Perhaps detox should be primary a medical intervention until stabilization is achieved. Could be a special unit at LEC or maybe an inpatient unit at MMCNI. There is clearly a pattern here and we can do better.

Dude was in the front detox cells. Those cells are monitored by cameras and are checked every 30 minutes electronically by a jailer physically going to each cell and using a electronic device to check each cell into the computer system. The jail did everything to protocol. dude was very intoxicated, very overweight, and very unhealthy.

Maybe if they were not drunks or druggers they wouldn’t end up in jail and detox.
The DCI was notified immediately. There’s no “coverup.” Sounds like somebody has spent a few nights in the CG county lock-up themselves.
