NIACC’s Khat wins pair of regional titles

STORM LAKE – NIACC’s Wal Khat claimed a pair of NJCAA Region XI indoor track and field titles this past weekend.
Khat won the 600-meter run in a school-record time of 1 minute, 21.66 seconds. He also won the 800 in 1:54.05 as the Trojans placed third at the regional meet with 63 points.

Khat broke the old school mark in the 600 of 1:22.11 by Veherney Babob at the national meet on March 7, 2014.

Also for the Trojans at the regional meet, Andre McKinney was fifth in the 200 (23.32) and seventh in the 60 (7.36).
The Trojans’ Samuel Dean was third in the 1,000 in 2:42.58 and John Kraft was sixth (2:46.82). Blake Keller was fifth in the mile (4:31.57), Ethan Klasi was seventh in the 400 (53.10) and David Carter was seventh in the 600 (1:25.44).
The Trojans were second in the 4×800 (8:19.16) running Jose Aguilera, Carter, Keller and Khat, second in the distance medley relay (11:00.41) running Dean, Dennis Elms Jansson, Canyon Kuhlmann and Kraft and third in the 4×400 (3:34.59) running Klasi, Scott Hengesteg, Ben VanHorn and Elms Jansson.
Men’s team standings – Iowa Central 376, Indian Hills 89, NIACC 63, Southwestern 47.

Meanwhile, the NIACC women were also competing. NIACC freshman Cailey Weaver placed fourth in a pair of events at the NJCAA Region XI indoor track and field meet on Friday and Saturday.

Weaver was fourth in the 600 in a time of 1 minute, 39.69 seconds and was also fourth in the 800 n a time of 2:33.83.

Also for the Lady Trojans, who placed third with 27 points, sophomore Kendra Schmidt was fifth in the 1,000 (3:24.74) and seventh in the mile (5:55.33).
The Lady Trojans placed third in the 4×800 (10:20.77) running Cassandra Bonsall, Keisha Gonzague, Amy Fullerton and Schmidt. They were second in the distance medley rellay (13:58.56) running Fullerton, Lindsey Haley, Gonzague and Guadalupe Diaz.
Women’s team standings – Iowa Central 297, Iowa Western 245, NIACC 27, Indian Hills 22, Southwestern 2.
