NIACC wrestling team places fifth at Central Invitational

PELLA – The NIACC wrestling team placed fifth at the Central College Invitational on Saturday with 47 points.

Host Central College won the invitational with 139 points. Briar Cliff was second with 71.5 points and Morningside was third with 49 points.

NIACC received second-place finishes from Jamarius Jackson (133), Tucker Black (165) and Jimsher Sidhu (285). Mario Pena placed third at 285 pounds.

In the 133-pound title match, Central’s Cameron Timok topped Jackson, 7-4.

In the 165-pound final, Central’s Ryan Vandall won by technical fall over Black, 15-0.

In the 285-pound final, Simpson’s Colby Vlieger pinned Sidhu in 2 minutes, 51 seconds.

Also at 285, Pena dropped a 5-1 decison to Vlieger in the semifinals and Pena took a 2-1 decision from Truman State’s Ashton Mutuwa in the third-place match.

NIACC returns to action Wednesday with a home dual against Iowa Lakes. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in the NIACC Recreation Center.

Notes: Jackson is 6-3 with 1 fall, 2 technical falls and 1 major decision … Black is 10-5 with 2 falls and 3 technical falls … Sidhus is 11-4 with 2 falls, 1 technical fall and 2 major decisions … Pena is 8-8 with 1 fall and 3 major decisions … Pena has a career record of 29-18 with 5 falls and 4 major decisions.
