UPDATED: Buffalo Center man dead, three others injured in apparent head-on crash reported near Hanlontown (photos)

HANLONTOWN – What appears to be a two-car head-on crash was reported Monday afternoon near Hanlontown, killing one person and injuring three.

A two-car accident took place sometime before 2:30 PM, at the intersection of Highway 9 and Balsam Avenue, North of Ventura and west of Hanlontown, around six miles west of Interstate 35.

According to a bystander, this “very serious accident with serious injuries and possible fatality” caused Highway 9 to be blocked for some time. State police, county sheriffs, fire departments and Mercy Air Med were all involved at the scene. At 5:15, Highway 9 was still blocked off.

There was a long line of Semis and vehicles detained and about an hour later were directed to go down to Cardinal Avenue. Semis had to back up, causing them some trouble trouble backing up.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, three people were injured and one killed in this accident. Injured were: Amy E. Kofron, age 27 of Forest City; Garret Michael Wilson, age 2 of Forest City; and Chloe E. Wilson, less than one year old, of Forest City. A west-bound vehicle on Highway 9 driven by an un-named person crossed a center line in a no-passing zone on Highway 9 at the accident location, striking the east-bound vehicle driven by Amy Kofron.

The deceased individual has been named as Breck C. Zittritsch, age 21 of Buffalo Center, Iowa.
