Mason City man who tore up hotel room jailed on probation violation

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who tore up a hotel room and was later given a deferred judgement in a felony burglary case in Floyd county was arrested on a warrant this past week.

Tyler James Trappe, age 24, was convicted of felony burglary in Floyd county back in 2012 and given a deferred judgement in a plea deal. He was put on probation for three years and other charges were dropped. However, he violated his probation in 2014 which landed him in jail, and then he violated his probation again this year. He was due in court May 31 to answer for this charge but failed to appear, leading to an arrest warrant. Mason City police picked him up at about 2:51 AM on August 3 at the 100 block of West State Street and took him to jail, and he was soon transported to Floyd county. He immediately posted bond and was released from jail, and he’s due back in court August 15.

Trappe was arrested and jailed after Mason City police were called to the Holiday Inn Express hotel, located at 3041 4th Street SW, on January 17, 2014 at about 3:00 AM. Police responded after a call alerting them to an out of control subject who turned out to be Trappe. A source told NIT that “a lot of damage” was done and someone who was at the room may have suffered an injury, but it was not revealed who that was. Trappe was charged with public intoxication and third-degree criminal mischief in connection with this incident. He pled guilty to the public intoxication charge and later pled guilty to the third degree criminal mischief charge. He was ordered to pay fines, court costs and restitution.

However, court records show Trappe still owes $189.10 in connection to the public intox charge. He also owes the entire $2,201.75 in fines, fees and restitution in the third-degree criminal mischief case. Third-party collections have failed, records show.
