Sandra Idler of Ionia said she was on her way home Friday and decided to stop at Kum & Go, 2005 U.S. Highway 18 E in Clear Lake for gas and a lottery ticket. And that decision ended up being in her favor as the “Bonus Crossword” ticket she bought ended up winning the 58th of 65 top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.
However, the 65-year-old retiree said she didn’t see the top prize right away, just a $3,000 one which was still a cause for celebration.
“I was pretty excited when I thought I won $3,000,” Idler told lottery employees Tuesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City. “Had it checked at the store Saturday morning and still thought it was just $3,000.”
That’s because the store clerk never told Idler how much she’d actually won, she just verified that she had a winning ticket.
“At first I didn’t realize it was $30,000 because the girl just said, ‘Congratulations.’ I said, ‘Is it what I think it is, thinking it was only $3,000?’ And she said, ‘Yes,’” Idler said.
When Idler returned home with her winning ticket and a store receipt confirming her win, her son then pointed out to her that she’d won the game’s top prize of $30,000.
“Then I really got excited,” she said.
Idler said a newer vehicle is at the top of her list after winning the lottery.
