Iowa man found guilty of trying to murder cop, sent to prison for 25 years

OELWEIN, IOWA – A man who was the subject of an intense manhunt after he tried to murder a police officer and then was shot himself as he tried to flee officers has been found guilty and sent to prison.

Abel Quijas Jr., of 145 7th Street North in Maynard, Iowa, was injured on September 11th, 2014, when two police officers attempted to arrest him at 210 1st Street SE in Oelwein, Iowa, as the result of an on-going narcotics investigation. Quijas attempted to flee with an officer partially inside his vehicle and attempted to strike another officer with the vehicle.  As a result, he was shot in the arm and hospitalized before he was arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder.

In May, Quijas was found guilty by a jury of attempted murder. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with credit for time served of 677 days. Currently, he is in custody at the Iowa Medical & Classification Center in Coralville.
