FLOYD, IOWA – A Charles City man lost his life Sunday night when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle was struck by a semi.
The incident took place at Highway 218 and Quarry Road at about 5:18 PM. Thomas Houdek, age 23 of Charles City, was driving his 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle from Quarry Road onto Highway 218, attempting to enter the northbound lanes. He pulled out from the stop sign in front of a 2001 Peterbuilt semi truck driven by 44-year-old Joshua Brood of Plainfield. The motorcycle and semi collided as Brood braked in an attempt to avoid the collision, causing the semi roll. Brood was ejected from the semi.
As a result of the accident, Houdek was pronounced dead at the scene. Brood was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City by Mercy Air Life helicopter.
I witnessed the accident and was first to arrive on foot to aid the semi driver. When asking the driver questions about his pain and making sure he had no severe injuries that needed attended to he asked about the rider. In emense pain he was only concerned for the young man on the motorcycle. When the driver found out the cyclist had passed he was immediately in tears. This situation is sad and hard for all involved and loved ones on both sides.

This accident should be a warning to semi drivers that they need to be secured by seatbelts. They are not safe up there in those big cabs.
My family and I all saw this tragic accident from 10 feet away. We were pulling off of 18 to stop at the BP. Thomas drove off of Quarry road, yielded in the median, then pulled right in front of the semi before our eyes! I’ll never be able to erase that from my mind. I feel so sorry for his family.

Our family is devastated by the loss of TJ and our thought are very much with his family and friends. We are also praying for the recovery of the semi driver. Death is a time to come together and be supportive of others to assist in the nurturance and healing.
