Mason City man guilty of felony drug possession

MASON CITY – A Mason City man caught with the illegal drug methamphetamine and a dangerous weapon has been sent to jail.

During a warrant check on December 4, 2015, a Mason City police officer discovered that the subject, 34-year-old Joshua Ross Hopper, was in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and illegal prescription drugs. Hopper was also found to have a dangerous weapon as the officer checked out 540 East State Street. Hopper was arrested on a felony drug possession charge and a charge of carrying weapons.

This month, Hopper negotiated a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to felony possession of an illegal drug in a correctional facility, carrying weapons and meth possession. Other drug charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to a 5-year prison sentence which was suspended, ordered to pay $1,977.75 in fines and court fees and sent to jail for 14 days. He must submit a DNA sample, as well.

Hopper was also arrested for drunk driving by Mason City police back on April 23. He has entered a not-guilty plea and awaits a jury trial on August 23.
