Dumb vandal commits crime and comes back to scene; cops nab him after chase

MASON CITY – A dim-witted vandal caused expensive damage to a car, left the scene and then returned, allowing police to gave chase.

The trouble unfolded on February 20, 2016, at about 7:17 PM. Mason City police officers were called to 325 5th Street NW. The reportingg party said someone had broken a windshield and damaged a parked car at this location.

Police say that the suspect, 24-year-old Cole Pearce of Mason City, had done the deed and left but soon returned to the area. He shows a home address as next door to the crime scene. Pearce then took off running from police in an attempt to get away a second time. Police were able to apprehend him a short time later.

The damage to the vehicle appears to be over $1,000 but less than 10,000, police say.

Pearce was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief (a felony), Criminal Trespass, and Interference with Official Acts.  He was jailed but soon released as he awaits a March 11 court date.

Pearce has already been found guilty of two counts of third degree theft after Mason City police brought the charges earlier in January in connection to earlier incidents. He is supposed to serve a 30 day jail sentence and pay $1,155.75 and $1,170.75 in fines and court fees.
