MASON CITY – A dangerous activity known as “car surfing” was reported in a busy public parking lot yesterday in Mason City.
Mason City police tell NIT that Monday afternoon after 4 PM, they received reports of at least one car and possibly two vehicles doing “donuts” in the parking lots between Walmart and Kohl’s on the city’s west side. Apparently, employees at Kohls called police to report that the vehicles were performing donuts and that at some point in their activities, a number of “kids were lying on the car hood and being flung off the car into a snow bank.”
As law enforcement rushed to the scene, “the kids apparently got into the car(s) and drove away.”
Police never located the vehicles.
Car surfing is described as a very dangerous activity, when a person drives a vehicle at least 20 miles per hour and then a passenger mounts the hood or roof of the car as it’s moving. That person then stands up and “surfs” the car. Apparently, these youths added the element of hurling themselves off the vehicle into a snow bank.
