MASON CITY – A convicted domestic abuser from Clear Lake allegedly tampered with a parked car in the Cultural Crescent and a police pursuit followed.

Mason City police told NIT that at 3:59 AM this morning, a female reported to police that a male had just removed the lug nuts from her vehicle tire, which was parked outside in the 500 block of East State Street.

The caller reported one of the residents knowing of the incident chased the male down the street where he entered a truck and drove away. A responding Mason City Police officer and Cerro Gordo deputy where able to intercept the truck and pull it over as it attempted to flee the Cultural Crescent, near 5th Street and South Delaware. The driver was 35-year-old John Paul Neubauer of Clear Lake.

According to police, Neubauer and one of the residents were allegedly involved in a property dispute. Neubauer was cited and released for tampering with a motor vehicle. The lug nuts were recovered and replaced.

Neubauer is a convicted domestic abuser. He was charged by Clear Lake police in April of this year with second offense domestic abuse assault. In a plea deal reached in July, he pled guilty to first offense domestic abuse assault and was sent to jail for two days and ordered to pay $995.94 in court fees; a fine was suspended. He is still awaiting a trial on a charge of criminal mischief.

  1. Am I the only one here who has never heard the term “Cultural Crescent” applied to a neighborhood in Mason City.. much less to ANYTHING at all???

    1. Calvin, the term “Cultural Crescent” is an old phrase revived by our wise and glorious mayor, Eric. When he got elected 6 years ago, he started referring to everything around his house at the 500 block of East State all the way to downtown as the luxurious Cultural Crescent. Apparently, the Cultural Crescent is a Shangri-la make-believe Blue Zone world where folks like the Cleavers and Gatsby’s hob nob to big band music, there is no crime, there are cook-outs every night, and Frank Lloyd Wright is the city administrator. We here at NIT simply want to propagate his vision and play along.

      1. Thank you for the reply. I guess maybe I’ll start referring to my neighborhood as Park Place and just watch as the property values shoot through the roof.

  2. What I want to know was this within the 1500 feet perimeter of the apartment house owned by Jean Marinos? Are theses incidents being listed as unnecessary use of police man hours? More importantly do they constitute a threat to our community.
