MASON CITY – Law enforcement has released the name of the man who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Monday in Mason City.
In the early morning hours of Monday, June 22, an officer with the Mason City Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle due to the driver being suspected of driving while impaired. The driver did not stop immediately, but he eventually did pull over about three minutes later in the 400 block of South Eisenhower Avenue.
As reported earlier, officers backed away from the vehicle when the driver was seen holding a gun to his head. Shortly thereafter, the driver fired a gun towards Lt. Ron Vande Weerd, who was still in his vehicle. Lt. Vande Weerd is a 27-year veteran of the Mason City Police Department and is the third detail commander. Lt. Vande Weerd was not injured.
A few minutes later the driver, now identified as Scott Allen Olsen, age 51 of Colorado Springs, Colorado, shot himself with a hand gun and died at the scene from the self- inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Olson had been in Mason City for about a week visiting relatives.
He was a good man.

Since you seem to know why would he drive all the way from Colorado to visit family then commit suicide?
Maybe he had a death wish. If the police had shot him they would have said so as it will show up in a autopsy. They had every right to shoot back but they say the didn’t. That is good enough for me and the law. If the autopsy shows something different they will let us know.

He must have been a good shot – most of these type suicide victims have to shoot themselves 3 to 12 times .
