GARWIN, IOWA – On June 16, 2015, Special Agents with the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation-Major Crimes Unit (DCI), in conjunction with Deputies of the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, arrested Anna Lori Leytham of Garwin, Iowa. Leytham, 51, Garwin’s former City Clerk, was arrested at her residence in Garwin, Iowa. She has been charged with: Five counts of Theft 1st Degree and one count of Ongoing Criminal Conduct.
In July 2014, the DCI was asked to investigate a possible embezzlement when it was discovered Garwin city funds were used to pay for Leytham’s personal credit cards, while serving as City Clerk. Leytham served as City Clerk from 1998-2013. She resigned from her position in early 2014.
An audit was conducted by Iowa’s Office of Auditor of State. Their investigation identified $555,763.66 of improper disbursements to include 235 checks or electronic payments totaling $404,101.12 on personal credit card accounts. Of the 235 payments, 203 were traced to credit card statements of Anna Leytham. In addition, improper disbursements were identified to include $145,224.38 of payments Leytham issued to herself. Specifically, she issued 107 checks totaling $68,419.04 to herself, which were in addition to her payroll checks.
Leytham’s initial appearance is scheduled for June 17, 2015 at the Tama County Courthouse.
Ok, she owns (or did own) a new deck out large black RAM pickup, a good size motor boat stored on the Mississippi River, trips to Italy & Hawaii, son’s wedding, same son has a stock car he races in Marshalltown and plastic surgery all on a 30 hr work week of City Clerk Garwin, Iowa. Ahhh, just does not add up to honesty. How could Leytham sleep and live in that small community to selfishly and self-center steal and how much more $$$ that authorities cannot find from prior years.
seems like every year there is one of these cases or more. Just how do they think they are going to get away with it. Being that dumb how did they get into the job anyway.
