MASON CITY – Police tried to sort out an apparent physical altercation early Tuesday morning on South Monroe Avenue that sent two to the hospital and left another man charged with a felony.

Mason City police tell NIT that Tuesday morning at 3:31 AM, a number of citizens reported a female running down the street near 2nd Street and South Monroe Avenue, yelling for help. Police responded and were assisted at the scene – listed as 123 South Monroe Avenue – by Cerro Gordo deputies and fire medics.

Upon arrival, police attempted to investigate and sort out the situation.  NIT is told a number of individuals were involved in the loud, violent altercation.

“It appears a male and female were arguing outside a nearby residence,” a police spokesman told NIT. “The argument may have turned physical. A relative then intervened using a crutch to possibly intervene or strike the male. The male then allegedly used the crutch to assault one or both females outside in the street. The male said he had been stabbed but that does not appear to have happened.”

A male and female were transported to Mercy hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The male subject, 34-year-old Derrell Howard Tate, was charged with felony Willful Injury and taken to jail. He is being held on bond as he awaits a court date on June 19.

It’s time to outlaw crutches. At least there should be background checks done.

They should be made to get a license to use those crutches. They are dangerous weapons. Just like beer bottles are.

We have good freebies here …. That’s what brings em in !!

South Monroe again. It is getting very dangerous to even drive through there at night. Send those people back where they came from.

I often see you saying things like; “imports”, sending people back to where they came from. What are you referring to? Where is it that these people are coming from, and what is bringing them to Mason City?

They are coming here from Chicago and Detroit. They are here to peddle drugs. I also know of some of these families that collect welfare from not only Iowa but from Illinois and Michigan also also. They claim residency in two states. Iowa is close proximity to both these states so it makes it easy for them to rob the system. Drug runs are also easier. It’s been going on for quite awhile. Too long.

I think if you would put some of them there sculptures or a few vultures it would calm things down in that there little chitcago area.

Wow, I don’t think it was quite appropriate to lump the Homeless Shelter, Community Kitchen and the Transition Center into the same category as the burgeoning ghetto. They are all service providers that work to help those who are less fortunate or are living with chronic and persistent mental illness or have fallen on hard times. A good number at the homeless shelter are Veterans, who have really seen it all…and served to protect our country. It is like lumping Jodi Draper in with you and…

To finish. Like lumping Jodi Draper in with you, Max and Cheryl Gerk during the last election….. Remember, putting u all out there as ” the Crazies”…. that was so wrong..

How nice. Just another scum bag from Chicago or Detroit. What’s it going to take to get these people out of out town.

For starters what it will take is for our government (local, state & federal) to stop doling out money, benefits and other subsidies like they were hard candy. The only reason some people are here is because of the freebies. We need to lobby our legislators and tell them enough is enough. Stop the hand outs!
