Mason City man charged with felony drunk driving

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who was arrested last month for drunk driving for the fifth time is now facing a charge of felony third offense operating while intoxicated.

Sidney Arthur Riekens, age 64, was stopped and arrested by the Iowa State Patrol on November 14 for drunk driving. He has been caught four times previously, the last time on May 29, 2012. In that offense, he was charged with felony third offense drunk driving, but was able to plead to a lesser charge of first offense operating while intoxicated. Court records show Riekens has been convicted of 2nd offense operating while intoxicated in Cerro Gordo County on three occasions between 1999 and 2005.

Cerro Gordo prosecutors have now charged Riekens with felony third offense drunk driving. He has pleaded not guilty and awaits a jury trial on February 3, 2015. A pre-trial conference is set for January 23.

Riekens could lose his license for six years, face between 30 days up to 5 years in jail, and be ordered to pay between $3,125 to $9,375 in fines if convicted.
