IOWA CITY – Law enforcement announced Friday a chilling turn of events in the search for a missing Iowa State student.
Ames police, which had been at the forefront of the search for 20-year-old Tong Shao, confirmed Saturday that the Iowa City Police Department located the car belonging to the missing Tong Shao and that they found a body in the car.
“At this point, this investigation has moved to another stage and the Iowa City Police Department will be handling that,” Ames police said. They had released a number of alert and bulletins seeking help from the public in recent days, saying Shao could be anywhere between Ames, Iowa City and Minnesota.
The last verified contact with Shao was on September 8, when she advised she was in the Iowa City area and was going to be going to Minnesota to visit friends. Since then, neither her family nor friends have had any contact from her. The phone she had been using has been disconnected. Concern over her whereabouts grew as the days passed since she was last seen, and Ames police had reached out to numerous other law enforcement agencies in the case.
It has further been reported that a person of interest in the case has left the country and may be in China.
The investigation is in full-swing at this time.
