MASON CITY – A teen has been caught after allegedly using a knife to rob a Mason City convenience store.
Mason City police said Tuesday morning that they were dispatched to the Kum & Go store located at 1465 4th Street SE at about 7:28 AM to investigate an armed robbery. Police were told a lone subject entered the store brandishing a knife and wearing a mask.
After an unknown interaction with an employee, the subject then fled the store northbound on foot and was apprehended soon thereafter by officers not far from the store.
The subject was apprehended on school property, according to the Mason City School District. “The incident occurred before school hours. At no time was there a threat to the school district students or staff.”
Mason City High School is directly north and east of the store that was robbed, and Jefferson Elementary is just west of the store.
Charged with felony B first degree robbery was Christopher James Hjelmgren, age 17 of Mason City. A felony B offense carries a maximum prison term not to exceed 25 years, which may be deferred or suspended unless the crime was forcible.
Hjelmgren was taken to jail and held on bond.
