RUSSELL, IOWA – Two people died as a result of a plane crash on August 9 southeast of Des Moines.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), on August 9, 2014, about 1:10 central daylight time, an amateur-built Barger RV-7A airplane, N92BF, was destroyed when it impacted terrain near Russell, Iowa. The pilot and passenger received fatal injuries. The aircraft was owned and operated by the pilot under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as personal flight. Marginal visual meteorological conditions existed in the immediate area of the accident site and the flight was operated on a visual flight rules flight plan. The flight originated from the Ottumwa Regional Airport, Ottumwa, Iowa at an unconfirmed time, and was bound for the Meadow Lake Airport, Colorado Springs, Colorado when the accident occurred.
The NTSB investigates accidents in aviation, highway, marine, rail and pipeline and makes recommendations to improve transportation safety.
The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner with the assistance of Division of Criminal Investigation Crime Lab, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, and the Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed the identification of pilot and passenger involved in a single-engine small aircraft crash as John and Resia Wood of Colorado Springs, CO. An autopsy was performed on August 8, 2014, by Dr. Dennis Klein, who determined the cause of death to be multiple blunt force injures on both occupants of the aircraft. The manner of death will be certified as accident.
