MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health is asking the public for help plugging abandoned wells. Up to $400 per well is available, with 20 wells needing to be plugged in Cerro Gordo County by June 30, 2014. Funding is available on a first come, first serve basis.

This funding is provided by the statewide Grants-to-Counties program. Abandoned wells are a pathway for contaminants to enter the groundwater and can also pose a safety risk for people, pets and wildlife.

Homeowners should contact a certified well contractor to properly plug abandoned wells on their property. Proper documentation must be submitted by the well contractor to receive the reimbursement.

If you have questions or for more information, call the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health at 641-421-9336.
