Memorial Day observed in Mason City

MASON CITY – A celebration in remembrance of those that served their country started at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery at 9:15 AM, Monday.

Following the program at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery was the “Salute to the Dead” at Memorial Park. A motorcycle police officer escorted the parade of soldiers and mourners to the entry of Memorial Park.

There were 460 flags displayed on the Avenue of Honor at Memorial Park. One representing each military solder in the cemetery. “It took about five or six guys about an hour to set them all up,” said one of the ladies handing out programs to the guests of the ceremony.

The Union Veteran’s Monument, the Grand Army Monument and the Spanish-American War Monument, the Doughboy and Owens Grove Cemetery, will be decorated by the Daughters of the Union Veteran’s. Display of flags and crosses, Veterans Memorial Association.
