Rep. Latham wants Nigerian kidnapped girls returned

WASHINGTON D.C. – Iowa Congressman Tom Latham today released a statement regarding the actions of Boko Haram, a Nigerian terrorist organization responsible for the recent kidnapping of over 200 young girls last month:

“The actions of Boko Haram is a an outrage. Their kidnapping of over 200 young women last month, and more this month, is a clear display that the group poses a blatant threat to the people of Nigeria. With around 40% of the population of Nigeria being under the age of 15, Boko Haram’s goals of restricting access to education of young people are a drain on their economy, a continual burden to their people, and an action that should not allowed to pass without a response.”

“I am working with a bipartisan group of members in Congress on this issue. The group is drafting a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry urging them to support the addition of Boko Haram to the United Nations Security Council Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda linked organization list.
Being included on this list allows much needed action to be taken.”

Boko Haram is already designed as an official Foreign Terrorist Organization by The Department of State. The addition of Boko Haram to the United Nations Security Council Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda linked organization list allows for further sanctions to be placed as well as the opportunity for participating countries to freeze assets, ban travel, and embargo any arms shipments to the group.

“After having raised my daughters and having a grandchild the same age as some of the kidnapped victims, I can’t image the pain that the parents are going through. The House is ready to act.”
