NORTHWOOD – An automated message said Thursday at about 3:15 PM that Northwood residents may now return to their homes after an explosion earlier today forced the town to evacuate.
The Des Moines Register reported that the entire town was being evacuated after a fire involving sulfuric acid at the town’s airport.
Citizens of Northwood were told to leave town immediately following the incident. Authorities went door-to-door and made phone calls to residents urging them to leave. Residents were told to go to the Kensett Community Center. Many residents made their way there, taking pets with them. Bus drivers were asked to help transport people out of town. Some Northwood residents made their way to Mason City to wit out the situation, hoping they would be able to return home.
There were reports of persons seeking medical attention due to the emergency in Northwood.

Fire was not at airport it was at the coop fertilizer plant near the airport.

I am working on the design of the patch to be worn on the uniform. When you are sworn into my political movement, you’ll be on the correct side of history. The Uniforms will be all black, with a black beret, and a sun patch which is being prepared now by a graphic designer I know in Iowa City. “I Pledge Allegiance To The Sun” is the inscription. I’m also working on the structure of the organization dividing it into divisions: Defense, Engineering, Medical, Agrarian, Communications. You’ll have your primary discipline, and be able to earn any cross disciplined patches, upon proving your knowledge and performance. It’s all in the works. Some basics: Age is not a factor. Criminal History disqualified only on presence of victim. Non Victim Crimes are discarded. There is no rank…only years of experience, and discipline and performance patches.

The fire involves an Ag Chemical facility at the Northwood airstrip, and has nothing to do with aviation. MCFD has units assisting.
