UNI no match for fourth-ranked Wichita State, loses 82-73

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Wichita State Shockers improved to 25-0 on the year with an 82-73 win over the University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team in front of a sold out McLeod Center on Saturday night.

The Panthers packed 7,150 fans into the McLeod Center for the third-highest crowd in the building’s history.

Wichita State (25-0 overall, 12-0 MVC) had five players reach double-figure scoring led by 18 from Tekele Cotton. Cleanthony Early added 16 points and Darius Carter chipped in with 15 points off the bench. Carter was 6-for-6 from the field. Fred VanVleet totaled 14 points and Ron Baker scored 12 for the Shockers.

UNI was led three players in double-figures with Matt Bohannon leading the way with 17 points. Bohannon drained five 3-pointers on the night. Seth Tuttle posted 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Wes Washpun tallied 14 points off the bench and a team-best six assists.

UNI trailed 44-37 at the break, but scored the first six points of the second half to trim the Wichita State lead to 44-43 with 18:28 left in the game. WSU then went on a 16-3 run to open up a 14-point lead at 60-46 with 10:37 remaining.

The Panthers cut the margin to nine on two different occasions in the closing 10 minutes but could not get any closer as the Shockers won for the ninth time on the road this season.

UNI will take on Loyola this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
