Final touches being made at Mason City High School

MASON CITY – The final touches on the re-furbished Mason City High School (MCHS) are now being made ahead of the start of school next week.

Freshmen go to school Wednesday and the rest of the students start classes Thursday.

The new MCHS now offers the comfort of air conditioning, a perk the school lacked for decades and was a source of frustration for students and teachers over the years.  An elevator was also installed.  Crews were inside the building last week buffing floors and walls.  The main office is now being added to.  Staff at the school said that a new office directly west of the main doors (across the hall from the main office) is being finished, where students will file through as they enter the building for “security purposes”.  Elsewhere on campus, landscaping is underway.  The new, modern lunchroom was finished last year.

John Adams Middle School (JAMS) renovation was finished in 2012.  High school students used that building last year as the High School renovation was completed.  Portable classrooms were brought to campus for eighth graders who were displaced from JAMS.  Seventh graders displaced from JAMS attended class at Madison School.

The portable classrooms outside Mohawk Field are now gone – grass seed is down to put the field back to it’s original condition – but the remnants of the structure are being put to good use.

The bright red triangular rooftops that stood over the entrances to the portable classrooms are now being installed at two locations.

At the main entrance to Mohawk field, one of the rooftops is being installed over the ticket window.

Near the Alternative School, a rooftop is being installed on concrete posts to create a picnic area.
