Culvert construction project near Osage completed

BRITT, Iowa – The culvert construction project on Iowa 9 at Sugar Creek, just west of Osage, opened to traffic at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 11th, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Britt construction office.

Iowa 9 had been closed at this location since the road was washed out by a flash flood May 19-20.

The new structure is a three-barrel precast concrete box culvert, with each barrel measures 14-feet by 14-feet. The culvert was constructed at a cost of approximately $1.4 million, with additional financial incentives to be paid to the contractor for early completion of the project. The construction project was let June 4. While the contractor was allowed working 40 days to accomplish the construction work, it was completed in only working 21 days.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limits and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
