Afghan army losses in summer Taliban offensive hit 100

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 26 (UPI) — Afghanistan Sunday said it carried out more than 2,000 combat missions in recent weeks against Taliban forces reinforced by fresh troops out of Pakistan.

Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said the reinforcements came from religious schools in Pakistan that had been closed down.

“Based on our information, Taliban has closed all its religious Madrasas in Pakistan and Taliban has deployed all its fighters in Afghanistan to carry out insurgency and suicide attacks,” Azimi said last week in Kabul.

The recent fighting included an uptick in attacks in the Kabul area, Khaama Press reported.

The summer offensive has resulted in casualties on both sides. The ministry said Sunday the national army lost more than 100 soldiers in the current Afghan month. The Taliban lost 443 fighters with 581 others wounded or captured.
