New Exhibit at the NIACC Gallery

Calvin deRuyterMASON CITY – Mesmerizing, Landscapes, featuring the work of Minneapolis/St. Paul artists Calvin deRuyter and Susan Fryer Voigt are currently on exhibition at the North Iowa Area Community College Gallery. The exhibition will be on display until March 20, 2013.

Calvin deRuyter graduated with an art degree from Hamline University, located in St. Paul, Minnesota and has had a successful career in publishing. Calvin rediscovered his passion for art at a later stage of life, and started taking workshops. The turning point was a workshop with the artist Skip Lawrence, who taught him to explore watercolors as he wanted, versus “the standard rules of watercolor.” Since 1998, deRuyter has been creating spectacular watercolors, which range from beautiful landscapes to colorful abstract paintings.

Susan Fryer Voigt has been teaching art classes and workshops since 2000. With her husband Bill, they opened the Susan Fryer Voigt Studio/Gallery in 2006, and moved into their current location at Dock 5 of the Northup King Building in 2008. Voigt’s knowledge and range of painting techniques or styles comes from the many instructors that she has learned from in the past.

Calvin deRuyter will be giving an artist demonstration on watercolor painting techniques at 1:30 p.m., in Room 9, Fine Arts Building on February 11, 2013. Then at 2:30 p.m., Susan Fryer Voigt and Calvin deRuyter will give an artist lecture with a reception for the exhibit in the NIACC Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
