UPDATED: Hampton child injured by “MacGyver bomb” on May 4th; five juveniles involved

HAMPTON, IOWA – On May 4, 2012, at approximately 8:22 PM, Hampton Police Department received a report of a plastic bottle exploding on South Federal in close proximity to young children after the bottle was thrown from a vehicle.  One child had to be treated for injuries received in the explosion.  The explosion was caused by a chemical reaction from within the bottle and also known as a “MacGyver” bomb.

After a thorough investigation, five juveniles (two age 16 and three age 17) will be charged.  All five will have a charge of Reckless Use of Fire or Explosives.  A charge of Aggravated Assault will also be made on the juvenile who threw the bottle toward the children.
