Bull and Barrel Bash enjoyed at North Iowa Events Center over the weekend

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – The North Iowa Events Center hosted the Circle C Rodeo, Mason City Bull and Barrel Bash Friday and Saturday night.

When the flyer said “Something for the Whole Family”, they were not joking. This rodeo was packed full of different events. Every year, this event seems to be getting more and more popular with people. The bleachers, the extra bleachers that were set up were all full and some people were standing to watch, as well as some sitting on the ground. All around a great show from the North Iowa Events Center and Circle C Rodeo.

Saturday night started off with the Coronation; the Crowning of the Little Miss Rodeo, the Rodeo Princess and the Iowa Rodeo Queen.

From there they went to giving tribute to the American Soldiers, with a standing crowd, the MIA/POW flag was paraded around the arena. Then the spectators enjoyed barrel racing, bull riding, mutton bustin’ and the Wild Horse Race.

In the meantime, the Funnyman, known by most of us as the “Rodeo Clown”, Jeff “Hy-Pockets” Heuer, was keeping the audience entertained with his props, jokes and tossing of frisbees and t-shirts into the crowd. The announcer, Jason “TEX” Hetland, and the Funnyman kept the crowd laughing between rides. The Funnyman did a little posing for the NIT camera. Nothing like watching and laughing along with the Rodeo Clown.

After one of the cowboys was thrown from a bull, the bull came running towards the fence, kicking and swinging his horns. “That bull was really mean,” said MaKenna Hetland, the daughter of “Tex”, the announcer.

One of the fairgrounds board members was describing what the Wild Horse Races were like. “Three men would go out and try and saddle up a wild horse. One of those men would try and ride the horse, after being saddled, back and forth across the arena. It is not an easy thing to do.”

The Circle C Rodeo Association is located between Alden and Iowa Falls, just north of D-20. It’s mission is to provide a place where kids and their families can come and have good, wholesome family entertainment.

The Circle C Rodeo Association was established in June of 1998. It is a non-profit organization, run by a group of volunteers, who donate their time and help to provide a place where kids can come and participate in the sport of rodeo.
