‘Cool dad’ accused of driving at nearly 3 times the alcohol limit

Kyle Rex Boyer said all he wanted was to be a “cool dad.”

The 30-year-old Burlington man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving. Police said he drove his 4-year-old son to get food for the toddler at a local eatery.

Boyer was booked into the Des Moines County jail on initial charges of felony drunken driving, child endangerment and possession of marijuana.

Officers were sent to McDonald’s restaurant, 1725 N. Roosevelt Ave., at 1:54 a.m. after someone reportedly smelled alcohol on Boyer’s breath and was concerned a child was in the car.

Police said Boyer had slurred speech. He reportedly acknowledged drinking and realized he shouldn’t be driving, but he wanted to be “the cool dad and get his son a cheeseburger and fries.”

Boyer failed a field sobriety test with a 0.210 blood/alcohol content. The legal limit in Iowa is .08.

During a patdown, police said they found a small baggie of marijuana in his right front pocket.

Court papers indicate Boyer was convicted of drunken driving in 2002, then again in 2007.
