My experience with Matt is that if you just cool off for a few days, he’ll let you back. I’ve had some tussles with him on various things, and yes this is his sandbox, and yes, he can be partial to one view over the other, but generally this is a pretty good outlet to communicate with members of your own community…helluva lot better than the Globe Gazette or Facebook. With that said, I do wish Matt would allow 100% free speech sans total non-relevant spam garble muck of course. I like when even my enemies get their say. Sometimes you just want to throw the punches, when you’re angry about something.

I had the opportunity to visit some of the schools in Austin, Minnesota last week. What I saw on my visit was smaller schools, smaller classrooms, and older buildings. But the great thing about this school system was their technology was up to date, wonderful teachers, and a great schedule that doesn’t even compare to Mason City. Granted these buildings seem old and out of date, but I think what matters is that the kids are still learning the industrial tech side of things with all the upgrades in technology in our society. And there’s no million dollar price tag to the residents for building upgrades, and there’s no children going to school in trailers like our 8th graders do. AND they start school after Labor Day and are out before Memorial Day. And that’s not just in Austin, it’s the entire state of Minnesota. My question is, why on earth are the kids in North Iowa, especially Mason City starting back to school in the middle of August when it’s hotter than blazes? And why are they still in school in June? And why is it everytime you turn around our superintendant in Mason City and our school board is asking for more money for something??? The trailer thing really hits a sore spot with me. There are empty school buildings in Mason City that could have accomodated these students while the renovations were being done. And were all these renovations completely necessary? Or is it that Anita Micich just loves to spend the taxpayers money in Mason City? It is time to step up and tell our “elected school board” how we feel about the school system in Mason City. Millions of dollars went into the renovations of John Adams and the High school, then the kids still have to bring fund raisers home and they say it’s for computers and such. Does anyone see the problem here? I think more money should be spent on the kids education and not on the buildings themselves. I for one am so tired of the school board and the superintendant. She doesn’t have residency in Mason City, she rents, so she doesn’t even pay property taxes that help pay her salary. The school board cowers and does whatever she wants them to do. I am asking every parent in this district to step up and call the school board members, go to the meetings and let’s get some things changed for the better in Mason City. I would be curious to find out how much longer we have to endure Anita Micich, was there a contract? Or can we just tell her to take a hike and send her back to her little rich suburb of Des Moines? Let’s start thinking about the kids in the school system.
1. Austin has Hormel headquarters. We don’t have anything close to anything like that pumping money into our community.
2. Schools ALWAYS need more money no matter WHAT. They will always find a way to spend what they have and whine for more. Austin has fundraisers, don’t kid yourself
3. Renters pay rent, which covers property taxes and then some otherwise people wouldn’t rent out residences. Renters pay property taxes.
You may want to think about relocating to Austin MN. It sounds delightful.
I have a child in 8th grade in the mobile classroom, and it’s been a very challenging year. It’s been very stressful on not only the students, but I’m sure it’s been quite rough on the staff as well. This is one parent that will be glad when this school year is over. When you mention Hormel, there are industry in Mason City also. So why aren’t these places helping our district? Places like Curries, Kraft, Cargill, Armour?? I guess I don’t understand wake up’s comment that Hormel is pumping money into their school system.
Well until local schools perform as good as others, why more money/support? Here is a comparison.
·High School A: $11,008 per year, Graduation rate, 83%, college graduation rate 14%.
·High School B: $9000 per year, Graduation rate, 93%; College graduation rate, 70%.
Stats come from 2009¹. High School B is an inner-city facility with 800 students. High School A is Mason City High School with 1250 students.
¹ Statistics differed from one source to another as far as MCHS. The inner-city school is based upon a telephone conversation. Additional funding at the inner-city school for athletics and so forth comes exclusively from Alumni. No tax money is used.
Mason City is lucky to have large businesses located here to support a lot of community needs. Be it Salvation Army, United Way, Youth group, or what have you. That is in addition to their property taxes.

My school had temporary classrooms like this. It wasn’t difficult, and had better HVAC than inside the main school. What’s the problem?

I don’t get the comment either. Also, @observer, it’s not the 60’s and 70’s anymore. Bullying is at an all time high. The mobile classrooms are small and cramped, there’s no privacy and not much elbow room when they are all passing in the hall. And the last time I visited, it seemed the ceiling is already in bad shape, (it’s only been used this year),the stairs are not good either, and they still have another year to go on the contract. Yes, a contract was signed to keep the mobiles for 2 years. Would love to know the price tag on that. My point is, is that I feel as a parent my child and every other child in the district deserves better. They deserve a summer break, they deserve to not be in school when it’s scorching hot outside. The school calendar is set to accomodate the kids in sports and to accomodate teacher inservices, etc. The teachers have time in the summer, I don’t understand why they can’t take inservices in the summer months, they are getting a paycheck during the summer. I understand there is summer school, but it’s not all summer. And c’mon, seriously does anyone really think that our superintendent is worth 180 grand a year?
i went K-12 in minnesota and we started the day after labor day and went til the early part of june, usually the 8th or 10th and rarely had a snow day.

Matt, it is a story of two large entities, with very powerful lawyers and lobbyists. In both cases, it is not a matter of the desire of the people, but those few with money or gifts or promises to toss around in return for favors.
I am sure from my research, it was not really what the Founders had intended to happen. And it will take quite a few Mr. Smith’s going to Washington to bring about change. Over-simplistic? Perhaps. Possible, I really believe it can be.
Great point Matt. When I heard that CEO’s and execs were having business get-aways to California in posh hotels with massages and caviar using the Bailout money the taxpayers had just given them…I knew those bastards were beyond redemption. I knew Obama had to make inside deals to get elected…but failure to prosecute was a huge mistake and it was a colossal miscarriage of justice. I still owe student loan money, yet those Wall Street jerks get all of their debt forgiven. I would have preferred to see the entire financial system collapse, so we could start over, building something fair and solid from the ground up.
I absolutley can not believe that the Mason City Aquatic center will not open till June 2nd… The pool is full and the weather is going to be hot this weekend. What a crock… Plus it closes in the middle of August??? How much money did this facility cost? And our kids barely get to use it!!!

I went to a graduation reception last Saturday in Rockwell and their pool was open! I know where I’ll be taking my kids this weekend!!!
I don’t understand why the Rec department won’t open the pool on the weekends until school gets out. And I don’t understand why they don’t keep it open on the weekends even after school starts. But I guarantee you the first week they are open, they will have to close because some unresponsible parent won’t bother to put a swim diaper on their child and there will be poop in the pool. It was quite ridiculous how many times last year they closed because of poop. This year I will be keeping track and asking for a reimbursement on my pass for everyday they have to close.

The Mason City Aquatic Center is a huge financial burden to the taxpayers of Mason City! It should have been open for Memorial Day Weekend !! Just another example of City government neglect and wastefulness !

When I pulled up to drop my child off this morning. I was asked by my child, “Where’d the turtles go daddy?” I am sure there were many others as well. Reggie I understand what you are trying to say about getting the other side of the story. But after five years of these people putting up with this do you really think Brent trout or vicor’s Mark Holt has any credibility with anyone. There was nothing new in the globe story NIT reported the comapny was supposely looking into some type of filter system and it was going to be installed soon.
I don’t think these people have been putting up with this for 5 years.It’s my understanding that they just moved out to the south Benjamin site within the last year. The south Carolina site has been stinking up the city for decades.

I just learn that the Globe Gazette District Managers does’t care about their carriers they just want the carriers to get their routes done no matter what.
Those district managers are nothing but a glorified carrier, the only difference they have is that they have a desk they sit at all day doing nothing. I had a medical injury once and could barely walk and they STILL made me do my routes.

If any of you are from Hampton or have children specifically in the Sixth grade. Heed this warning; you NEED to be in control of your kids especially the boys. I’m sure you know if your child is one of them who are currently being a BULLY at that school. Actions will be taken and possible law suits if you can’t control your kids.
What kind of bullying is taking place?
Someone should file assault charges on the kids. If the school won’t stop it, the local law enforcement needs to step in, but parents have to be willing to reach out to them or there is nothing they can do to help them. Local law enforcement needs to “help” the school get control of this stuff before they have nothing but hoodlum teenagers that think they are above authority and untouchable. Not so sure that isn’t already the case with those HS teens making bombs and bomb threats in the same school district.
@ Good Question, Thanks for the post. I know another family that is going through the same thing as you and these parents need to know what there children are up too. I also think that the school officials need to take more action as well. Its no wonder you hear about all of these little punks throwing McGuiver bombs and writting threats on the wall. The parents of these six graders need to put the smack down on there kids before they are the ones in the paper. Seems like Hampton is getting a bad rep right now. Best of luck to you in your case. It’s bad enough with everything else that is going on in our world, but then for these children to make threats and physically harm my child, I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THIS CRAP AND STANDING UP TO THEM AND THEIR PARENTS. If these kids want to be Bully’s then this family is going to show them what happens, we won’t take it anymore. You will not break the will of my child or any other children.

Go talk to Ron Raney the HD School Board President, he can probably help take care of this too. Call all of the board members and let them know what your intentions are and what you are dealing with too.

Exactly. If you want to look at this from a religious stand point…doesn’t the bible say to love one another? To treat people the way you want to be treated? Are gay people hurting you personally? I too was recently stopped for a break light out. It was a young cop that pulled me over and when he asked for my number it threw me off. So I called one of my friends on the force. The answer is one of the new shift leaders (or whatever you want to call him) Is having his officers get in the habit of asking so that they can gather as much info as possible.

It is becoming standard practice it seems throughout the state and county… Our phone numbers now seem to be connected to our identity… Unless you are a trac phone user that is.

Everyone in the town of Mason City needs to grow up and leave other people alone. From what I have read on a few stories here on NIT, these people are trying to change for the better but no one will let them if the girls of FED UP NORTH IOWA are trying to change their lives for the better let them. If a mom who had a bad history is trying to make her life better let her. Quit bringing up everyone’s past mistakes. Drama can end but you have to end it yourself. Grow up stop acting like little kids. Do you want your children to act like this when they are older? You need to be the better person and stop and look at the damage you may cause in someone’s life. All the drama and comments I have seen on a few of these stories are outrageous. It seems they can’t take the truth. I’ve been following the posts on this site and everytime someone mentions their pasts, they are threatened by someone in their family. Seems to me it’s THEM and THEIR families that need to grow up.
As far as their pasts and their mistakes being so old, April was just a month ago when they were all over facebook celebrating 4/20. Making changes in life means making changes longer than just a few weeks ago. The admins of Fed ^ are a joke.
there are other peoples past that needs to be let go. but a certain woman wont let it go. she was just attacking a mother not that long ago. a mother who lost her kids to the state. i went and looked up this woman’s history the one who lost her kids. i saw that she got one of her kids back to me that a pretty damn good start to getting her life back together. but the woman is always attacking the mother, not letting her get her life together. saying stuff about her ex boyfriend and what not. i went and looked up the woman attacking the other woman i saw she was arrested for theft and hot checks and drinking and driving and then she was also arrested for driving while barred on the drinking and driving charges. the other woman her only violations were riding with out a seat belt and hitting a person or two. one she was found not guilty by the courts the other she took responsibility for. the other charges i saw were dismissed. but seriously this town needs to grow up and leave the good people alone that arent bothering anyone. go after the people who are bothering people. not a person who sticks to themselves and doesnt talk to anyone. i dont talk to anyone but yet i get bothered by idiots and trash talkers 24/7

I am a hard working mother of three, college graduate in Medical Assisting currently achieving my bachelors in human service. And when I stop seeing their names in the court listings, stop seeing them threatening everyone, and stop seeing them posting horrible things on FB….maybe then just maybe I will take them seriously.

I spent about 30 minutes wandering around Max Weaver’s Rancho Z Garden this morning just checking out the sights. I have seen this many time and have seen the growths over the years, but I never actually took a stroll through it before. So many wonderfully little trnkets see. I’m sure if I went back regularly, I would notice new things I didn’t see on a previous visit even if Max hadn’t added anything new.
When I had reigned to my car, Max had shown up to “check on things” and he was telling me about how he has had multiple problems with thefts of scrap metal, people taking several old bicycles at a time, and most recently people are taking his land scalping rocks. He says it used to just happen at night, but now people are pulling vehicles up during the day and taking things.
What the hell is wrong with people?

I blame the scrap yards, these thieves are nothing more then sub-contractors out raiding our neighborhoods to bring the items to them.
I THINK when I read the new laws that were passed that the junk yards now have to ID people and keep the records for a few years.I could be wrong but if this is in fact a new law I think it would be very good and maybe stop or at least slow down the thieves.

I agree this isn’t the time to talk about a public funded civic center. I would be willing to bet though that some people’s ego wont let them stop pushing for it. We should of made the mall a casino down town would of been hopping then.

When is NIT going to publish the story about the 5 hampton dumont high school students that threw a dran-o bomb at a 6 year old boy (who is in the hospital with severe chemical burns). these boys have not been sent to a detention center or nothing all that i have heard is that they cannot play sports for 365 days. it has been said that these boys are going around town bragging on how they are not getting in trouble. i think they should be charged to the fullest. that poor little boy could of been killed. please get this story out there and check further into it so these brats get what they deserve! On May 4th at approximately 8:22pm, Hampton Police Department received a report of a plastic bottle exploding on South Federal in close proximity to young children after the bottle was thrown from a vehicle. One child had to be treated for injuries received in the explosion. The explosion was caused by a chemical reaction from within the bottle and also known as a MacGyver bomb.
After a thorough investigation, five juveniles (two age 16 and three age 17) will be charged. All five will have a charge of Reckless Use of Fire or Explosives. A charge of Aggravated Assault will also be made on the juvenile who threw the bottle toward the children.

That all depends Peter, on the type of wound, what organs the slug hit, and all sorts of other varibles. Sis was an ER nurse at what she liked to call, “the Maywood Knife and Gun club”, it was a meatgrinder. Sometimes she would see the same people week after week, other times, it was only once (they never made to the out door). So when she says a comment like yours is ‘BS’, I gotta take her word for it.

As far as the charges go, I doubt its a status thing. People are accidentally shot all the time. Just look at this past years hunting season.
As far as the injuries go, This place is out in the middle of nowhere and the first responders were probably volunteers which have increased response time. Plus a puncture wound to the abdomen leaves a lot of places for blood to go where it shouldn’t as well as bacteria and such in the organs that greatly increase the risk of infection.
Its odd how someone can get hit by a car one day and walk away and the next guy can die from an infection from stepping on a nail.

As some of you may know, currently the Mason City City Council is looking into privatizing the Garbage/Recycling/ and Lawn Waste Bags collection in town. Currently all users in Mason City pay under 10 dollars a month for the above services.
Facts:
1.Refuse Collection is not Tax Payer funded, it is funded by user fees.
2.The fee is based off of the break-even point for all costs associated with refuse collection in Mason City
3.All Lawn Waste Bags are picked up for free by the Sanitation Dept.
How can a for profit company beat this? By taking a loss the first year and sticking to the customers from there on out?????
If privatizing refuse pick up in Mason City seems like a bad idea, contact your counsel person and let them know.
I agree this is a bad idea. Hopefully the city leaders will talk with communities who have gone from public to private haulers to get their point of view as to rather this was a good plan or not. Mason City sanitation rates have not gone up very much year to year for the 20 plus years i have lived here and they dont cost tax-payers a dime in tax’s lets make sure that if the decision is made to privatize it is best for the citizens and not just a feather in someone’s hat.

You will miss them when you get your first bill from a private company. I used to live outside city limits and paid a small fortune for garbage and recycle, and that bill didn’t include my water either. And no they didn’t pick up my leaves either. Your bills will be at least double if not triple of what you are paying for garbage now. This is a horrible idea and yes everyone needs to contact their council person and the mayor and tell them NO!

When I moved here, I learned to follow the simple rules for recycling. It aint hard, and the rules are there for specific reasons. Over the years, it has been observed that a majority of bins are emptied on trash day. That means, they also know how to follow instructions.
You choose to place the bin out there knowing it has not been sorted correctly, or paper and cardboard not bundled, ect. Why blame the City workers when you don’t want to follow the instructions?
Glad money is not a object for you but it is for many of us. So follow the rules and you will get your stuff picked up.
If they privatize garbage you will be going to Lake Mills. We will no longer belong to the E 28 agreement with the landfill. This means when you clean out your garage and want to get rid of it you have to call someone and pay them to take or drive all the way to Lake Mills to dump it. I don’t know how many people are aware of this fact. Trust them they will have a system in place knowing where you are coming from if you are thinking they won’t know where I live.
Sandy, that is flat out wrong. The 28E does not hinge on the City hauling waste. LNI and the Iowa DNR will have to give approval for waste to go to Lake Mills. IDNR sets the landfill regions and they won’t change them.
I am not wrong. I said that if you live in Mason you can’t dump your garbage their if Mason doesn’t do the garbage pick up. I didn’t say anything about E28 hinging on anything. I said if we don’t belong to it we will have to go all the way to Lake Mills to dump our garbage. The DNR will have to look into all this I know.
Flat out wrong again, Sanday. The City’s membership in LNI is not tied to the City providing garbage pickup. As long as the City is a member, all waste must go to LNI regardless of who hauls it. LNI must approve of disposal of waste generated inside their service area to another landfill. It isn’t even legal for you to haul your waste to Lake Mills if it was generated in the LNI service area.
Oh my, where to start. First off, $10/month does NOT pay the whole bill for the sanitation department. As a professional truck driver, I can assure you, $10/month does not cover their costs at all. Not even close!

Yard waste picked up for free? There is no such thing as FREE… Does that mean Kum & Go puts the fuel in the trucks for free if it’s used to pick up yard waste? Are the driver and assistants off-the-clock and donating their time when it comes to yard-waste pickup? If a yard-waste truck has a flat, does the tire company replace it at no charge since it’s used for yard-waste? I am confident they don’t.
I for one have been greeted by presents from the Recycling Gods dumping all non-recycling all over my front lawn. I’ll be happy to see them become unemployed.
There are four companies I can think of that do what the city’s doing with garbage and recycling. That means competition, which holds the costs down somewhat.

Now, if only we can get the city to agree to let the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s office take over the police work, just think of how much we could save there?????? (It is done, in Iowa, frequently for smaller towns… why not Mason City?)
Have you ever lived in a city where you pay for your garbage pick? I have and it is not cheap. Oh yea when it first started it was but as time went on it got crazy. Look at the cable company. When they first came to town it was cheap now it is out of hand. I know prices go up but come on over 100.00 a month for TV and internet. Getting back to garbage you may have 4 companies that say they can do it but they are going to have to have a lot more equipment and a couple will drop out because they don’t have the up front money but maybe they can use TIF money if they know the right people. Now we are down to two companies and they have to get more equipment who is going to pay for that? It will be passed on to the consumer. The only company right now that could take the city garbage is Waste Management, you talk about keeping jobs local and money here their company is out of Wisconsin or Minn. can’t remember which one. All the big money will not be staying in Mason City.
Dear Trucker Dave, if what you say is true then anyone who bids the garbage will pay the same costs as the City would. Correct? But the City does not pay fuel tax which would give them an advantage.. The RFP’s have already come back and the private companys cannot compete with what the city charges.. but our Great leader Mayor Bookmeyer says he does not lose..so bend over Mason City and be prepared to pay more and get less because our Mayor does not lose. Ask anyone who has to pay for private garbage and they would be tickled pink to pay 9.60 a month for garbage, recycling and unlimited leaf pick-up!!!!
Better check your facts with the truth the 10 dollars a month does cover all the salaries, fuel,truck repairs, and so on. As far as other companies being able to provide the service cheaper because of competition is simply not true look at marshalltown, Austin how about Roochester they all are privatized and they pay more for service then we do. The advantage the city has in providing this great service is they do not make a profit at under 10 dollars a month they just need to break even.
All that and $1 will get you a cup of coffee at the end of the day.

Why is it some dog owners do not clean there yard of dog poo? I can’t hardly stand the smell in my front yard because the nieghbor has a lab that they let out on a chain an it poo’s all over there front yard, they never pick any of it up.
The dog barks alot when it is outside to. Going to be a long summer for all of us because I’m not going to continue to put up with the noise or the smell for the entire summer!
Better invest in some insect spray, because you will get a lot of them. The Health Department considers that to be a violation of health standards.
Call the City and file a complaint. Again and again if need be. Your neighbor is putting your health at risk. Going further, I am willing to bet, it devalues your property, and quality of life for your family. That would be more than enough just cause for the City to take action.
my neighbor have two big dogs. he use to let them poop in my back yard well one day i went to mow my grass this was three years ago. i stepped in a big big pile and he was outside laughing saying oh there is more then just that pile didnt offer to clean it up nothing. my other neighbors have had problems with him too. i griped big time to where i know HE heard me. after that he put up a wooden fence to keep his dogs in his back yard and out of mine but now they poop in his front yard and on the side walk in front of his house and in the grass right next to the street needless to say we dont go over there cause we dont want to step in big piles of dog feces maybe i should call the city on him cause he also lets his dogs run loose well he did i havent seen them in a while i barely see him and that is a good thing 🙂

i have not been in out mall for sometime until recently. wow what a joke that place is, theres more empty stores then ever before. i went down by the old movie theater and didnt realize the not only is the theater gone but also the arcade and a couple other shops. y hasent someone or the city show movies in their? i mean its not that bad of space to be using. instead of having the ten dollar shows or whatever they are out west have some cheaper ones their! i would love that cause i could actually take the whole family and not spend $100. anyone else see my point?

Because when CEC bought out the theatres they had no use for that one and before they decided to sell it they ripped out all of the seats and various other things in there to make it VERY expensive to start up a new theatre in there. Eliminating future competition. When it was up for sale my husband had toyed with buying it to show cheap movies for kids and various other things (old westerns, and horror movies, stuff you just can’t see anymore in a theatre for cheap!)you’re but to get it up and running again it would have neen ridiculous. 🙁

Does anyone know if all cities in Iowa have a minimum amount for the monthly water bill? I live alone and my monthly bill is $35.78 every month, whether I use any water or not. In fact, I spend six months of the year down south and I still pay $35.78 every month, using NO water, sewer or garbage services. It doesn’t seem right. Is this the way most cities do it? By the way, my monthly water bill down south is a little more than $2.00 a month.
35.78 is as low as it goes. Your bill will never be any lower. Privatize the garbage it will go a whole lot higher.
if you are gone for 6 months out of the year I think you can have your meter turned off or put in vacation mode. I know I have several friends that do something like that. The ladies at City Hall are very helpful, that is, if you don’t go in there with a chip on your shoulder or a bad attitude. Give it a try before you leave in the fall
I was going to suggest that also. Maybe they don’t realize that you only use their services part of the year. I’ve never had a problem with the gals at the water department.

I beleive Hanlontown charges about $9 a month no matter what.
Does Hanlontown include garbage pick-up, sanitary sewer, storm sewer charges as well. I think Hanlontown is all on septic tanks so they would not have a sewer charge. In mason our garbage is only 9.75 month cant beat that deal.

I have a question for the motorcycle riders out there.Is it legal for a motorcycle to split,drive in between, two cars on a four lane road.I’ve heard it was legal in California but I didn’t know about Iowa?Even if its legal it sure looks dangerous.I saw this happen on 122 eastbound by TSC.
It is not legal in Iowa or most states. I believe it is referred to as illegal or improper lane usage. It is patently unsafe.
I have also witnessed this in various area’s throughout town. And motorcyclists wonder why people get so upset with them, but WE are the ones who are supposed to make sure we see them.

What I’m getting sick and tired of is the bus drivers cussing at the little kids on the bus. Telling them to sit the F down. I have heard this my self. He cussed at a kid cause he stood up to get something while the bus was parked dropping off my kids. Also the school harding is allowing my child to be picked on. I had reported it tons of times and the principal says oh we dont allow bullying here. Ya right that is why my child comes home crying day after day. My child says kids have threatened to knock their teeth in one kid threatened to stab my child Another kid punched my at the bus stop. The school is allowing this to happen.

With all the news on bullying right now you would think that the school would do more for your child. Unfortunately there are many people out there in your situation. I think that the parents need to take action against the schools that allow this to happen, before something worse happens like the 13 year old girl from Kasson, MN.

Have a question??? I saw in the Globe today that there is a vigil for Darrian Rambo, and the Youth Center is sponsoring it and serving refresments with half of the money going to the Rambo family. Why??? There have been many unfortunate deaths of alot of youth in our community, why is this one child so special? Is it because it’s Lionel Foster’s grandson? Not that this wasn’t a sad thing to happen to young person, but why are people being asked to attend and give money to this family??? As I see in another article that it’s a Foster that has the Fed up North Iowa page on facebook and they are also asking for money. Sorry but this is the last family that I would give my money to.

We finally got some new neighbors to move into the house across the street after the house sitting empty for a year because of forclosure. The new guy went right to work on the yard that had not been mowed in about a year even though it had been turned into the city three times and the realtor twice. The guy worked his tail off and even swept the street which had a mess left by the city sweepers. He swept it up and put it in a nice neat pile on the corner for the street department to pick up. Our street department, one sweeper with a vacume truck following (not sweeping) showed up and promply called the police. A cop had to be dispatched and come to the address to tell the guy he had to move the pile from the street. Now understand it was city waste to begin with. The guy moved it four feet by himself while the cop and two street department workers sat there and watched him. Both sweepers had shovels on them and it wouldn’t have taken them two minutes to pick up the city’s trash and haul it away. Instead they sat there for 1/2 hour and watch him do it. Now I really feel good about paying more taxes for that bunch to sit on their asses.
Some wonder why people are leaving Mason City and why the have no respect for the City. I feel bad for the guy. If I would have witnessed it I would have went over and helped the guy. I’m not saying anything against you if you didn’t. I would have love to have had my kids home and had the chance to help the guy to show the city workers that working together makes a better place to live.
i called the city atleast 20 time on 221 29th sw house. its a DODGE HOUSE!!! every kid on the block has been in it. lawn hasnt been mowed. very tired of this pile of shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! going to talk to beermeyer next weeek, i hope i catch him while im in a good mood!!!!!

The businesses I ran are doing just fine. I my career I saved well over 2,000 job’s. How many have you saved with your big mouth. Contacting the city about any problems is a waste of time. They were contacted about the trash in the streets and did nothing . They were also contacted about the unmowed lawns (6 months without mowing) and did nothing. As far as spelling, you need to learn about comma’s and other puctuation. Also, I is always a capital. You must be a product of our current school system. Which means you probably can’t qualify as a sweeper operator. Now, try to get a life. I don’t work because after 50 years of managing people I have retired and no longer need to work.
Did anyone watch the council meeting last night and listen to Robin Anderson from the chamber of commerce talk about bandfest. Does this women and her organization really think anyone needs her or her lobby group to tell us how to act and how our children should act at bandfest. I raised my children to be respectful of people of all walks of life. Here is a woman that doesn’t have the time a day for the common folk. If you aren’t wearing a red scarf your not worth looking at much less speaking too. How would she know how people and kids will act at the bandfest she won’t be sitting in the cheap seats.
Last year I went to band fest for the first time in years. We sat in the 400 block of E State St. We had to track down a policeman because of a fight between some girl and her babies daddy. There were other issues after that. We finally moved down the street. A bunch of younger adults were sitting. It took about 5 minutes and their language became so bad that someone else in the crowd said something to them and there was almost an other fight. My point is people do need to be reminded how to act. I don’t know if it will matter, but nthey do need to be told./

What really gets to me is they claim to be against crime and fed up with it but a simple background check of the admins shows they are part of the problem of endangering and victimizing others.
Tyler Decker has was arrest just 5 days ago for driving while suspended. He is currently suspended after receiving two OWI’s in the past year, one of which landed him on a NIT article after he rolled his vehicle in the middle of town. He has been arrest three times for harassment of others in North Iowa, in addition to probation violations, disorderly conduct arrests.
Doeshea Foster the founder of the group has been arrested for burglary, conspiracy to commit a felony, burglary of a motor vehicle, unauthorized use of a credit card, false information to law enforcement officer, assault, harassment of a public officer employee, and numerous probation violations.
Tara Mekkelsen has numerous people who have taken her to small claims court over money she owed them, the last action served on her by the sheriff just 3 days ago.
Now it seems like the goal of this group is actually to get money from other people. Does their backgrounds seem like trustworthy people to you? If they are in-fact worried about all the violence and crime why have some of them been contributors to it?
Would it be a better idea not to just give people with such backgrounds money and contributions, but instead take this money and donate it to the local Youth Tasks Force, The YMCA Scholarship Fund, the Youth Center located next to Honda dealership on 5th?
It is up to you but you should make an informed decisions when the fox is guarding the hen house.

There’s an article in the Glob about this site. Not real impressed especially with the fact that one of the admins of the site is a Foster. C’mon, every week there is a Foster in the paper for something. This is a family that has done nothing for this community. Maria’s kitchen had a fund raiser when they were trying to startup in their present location. I don’t like it but if my tax dollars go to millionaires why wouldn’t they try at least.
Maria’s had a fundraiser because their previous building burned down, and when they wanted to rebuild the city would not cooperate with them. So they pretty much lost everything they had and needed to start fresh. This family has had a restaurant in Mason City for many generations. It all started with LaHacienda which years ago was located where the Decker house bed and breakfast is now. I supported their fundraiser and would do it again. Good family, good food.
The City had nothing to do with them not rebuilding and they gave Cleo and Ben $25,0000 to remodel the new location. Get your facts straight.

I for one think its commendable to raise money and seek investors in a non-traditional way…thinking outside the box is what made this great nation what it is today.They are only getting the money if their goal is reached also. What’s up with all the Slow moving and numerous trains EVERYDAY in this city…I have been late for work twice this week, because of sitting at a RR crossing for a half hour each day..I thought by law they could only block traffic for 5 minutes, at the most..Anyone know who to contact to complain about this matter, that would actually DO something about it? I would leave early in the morning, if I could…but have kids to drop off at certain times…Sooooooo, any insight or beneficial info on this matter greatly appreciated.

Good luck on the trains. They can do pretty much what they want and will just tell the city to stuff it if they bother to answer at all. We have been bitching about them for years with their loud horns and blocking the tracks all the time. Yes-there is a time limit which I think might be 15 minutes but the trains know it won’t be enforced. Call city hall and ask for Trout. It won’t help but you will feel better.
You can complain about the horns all you want. They have been here for a hundred years. And the laws governing them are in the Federal domain, not local. It’s called Interstate Commerce.
There are solutions, if you wish to pay for them. Close the crossings, build an over/underpass, or install technology for quiet zones.
I never wait anymore. Just turn around and go to nearest overpass, nine times out of ten it is faster than waiting!

Sitting in the mcdonalds drivethru for 30 minutes yesterday afternoon gave me time to observe and think: what sence does it make during a rush to send three grill people on break at the same time? ( i know thats their station because i didnt mind asking) if theres a drivethru lane isnt there a way to make sure everyone uses it or is it okay for obnoxiously loud white trucks to almost hit my car cutting me off? (he got an ear full too) and lastly, if i have to wait that long do you think you could remember my sons 4 piece mcnugget so idont have to waste morwe time coming in to fix your mistake? i think next time ill spend my 30 minutes driving across town to burger king – their double cheese bugers are better anyway.

we were grabbing it on the way out of town to attend a funeral this morning. i had just gotten off of work and didnt have time to cook, which i normally do.

I think before the city starter using center turn lanes they should have televised instructions for all the people that can’t figure them out. Iowa has some of the worst drivers.
The roads were just fine WITHOUT turn lanes, even then, it was a matter of bad drivers that caused the problems and accidents leading up to the so called need for turn lanes. The traffic moves SOOOOOOOOooooooo slow in this town now and for those of us that are GOOD drivers, we have to put up with the bad decisions that the city road department has forced upon us!
Bob: I see nothing wrong with the center turn lanes. I like them and think they are a good idea. the problem with the slow trafic is the people driving so slow. the people slowing down to turn arnt in your way anymore because of the turn lanes. so the problem lies in the moron in the first car driving so slow, talking on the phone, putting on makeup, looking at flowers, whatever.
Turn lanes factually, will add capacity to a roadway if used properly.
But certain roads such as IA 122 in the western part of town is poorly engineered. Lack of right turn lanes tend to reduce speeds and decrease capacity. As you go west past K-Mart where the speed increases to 40 mph, it is rare to attain that (much less 35 mph).
I am assuming the City and DOT don’t want any speedy through traffic. Witness the desire to eliminate the one-ways in town to “calm” traffic.
That flies in the face of what is happening now, and will increase bypassing downtown using streets like Monroe, N. Carolina, ect. You create a bottle neck, people will naturally try to avoid it.

There used to be a billboard in Texas, my great grandmother had her picture taken by it, that read “Mason City,Iowa – where you can commit murder and get away with it” That was back in the ’80s.Not much has changed.

By what stretch of your imagination do you think living in Mason City has anything to do with the Judicial System and how it works. Last I checked the city haa nothing to do with how courts hand down punishnent

They also represent the State, to which each court proceeding has it’s name above all else.
The MCPD makes arrests and in serious crimes the county or state prosecutors file the charges. The city has nothing to do with the judicial system other than the fact the court house is here in Mason City. The Govenor appoints state judges and the legislature establishes sentencing guide lines. The city has nothing to do with it. So if you think someone gets to light of a sentence write the govenor or call a legislator, don’t blame the city.

I think he does. who does the city attorney work for? the city. therefore since he does represents the city and the MCPD also represents the city then the judicial system can have something to do with Mason City. another question. does the city attorney have any say in “any” plea bargains? if he does then once again he is representing the city and letting some people off.
50 miles….the city attorney handles city matters such as contracts and giving legal opinions on such city matters as contracts, city ordinences, ect. He has nothing to do with criminal court cases. He never prosecutes anyone. That is all done by the state. My wife has a cousin that is a city attorney for one of the larger citys in Iowa and the only time he goes to court is to testify, never to prosecute. You need to get your facts straight. They have nothing to do with criminal cases. That is all county, state, or fed.
fine… but I live in a smaller town and the city attorney has taken me to court himself. more than once. these were not criminal offences but never the less he did it himself. it all boils down to the company you keep.
It boils down to the crime you committed, the evidence they have, and how a trial will effect the lifes of victims and witnesses. I think people that believe it is in who you know are way off base. Who you know may apply if you are looking for a job, but seldom does it get you out of a criminal situation.

The announcer would say “people are presumed innocent untill proven guilty, in a court of law” I use to say “guess what buddy, your not in court yet” these are not ideas I was born with, but situations I have been taught. like everyone else here, you live your life with the cards you are dealt. some people have it easier than others and some struggle just to survive every day. Im getting off subject, but dont judge someone untill you have walked in their shoes your whole life. You can go home to your loving family every night and forget about other peoples problems. some people have to relive it over and over again.

I have never been to mercy hospital. but I sure have heard some bad shit comming out of that hospital. the phrase “bad news travels fast” is very true. 50-100 miles away they are aware of how poor this hospital really is.
Can’t really blame Mercy. They have the highest professionals the Mason City area has to offer. The town is a parasite to its own people.
I am walking today because of the staff at Mercy took care of my knee. I was kept alive after a heart attack because of the staff at Mercy. My doctor, who is on staff at Mercy, treats me with respect, and listens to my needs.
Them folks are part of our community, our neighbors. Maybe friends or family. Do you think, for one moment, the collective employees would do anything to bring shame upon themselves, their employer, or community?
And given our current economy and state of health care funding, do you think you could do a better job? Remember where we are, and what we are.
Depends on your needs. Mercy is the BEST place to be if you have a heart condition or problem, Iowa City is the best for children, etc…
Some people think Mercy is awful and there’s some that think they are wonderful. Personally I am disappointed that they have completely eliminated my freedom of having a choice in our community. They have monopolized the entire medical field in North Iowa. Good luck finding a doctor that is in private practice, and if you’re lucky enough to find one, they more than likely don’t have hospital rights, which means if you need to be hospitalized, you have to see a Mercy physician. Ande sorry, I don’t think their care is anything to boast about. Good bedside manner is something of the past with this company. It seems all they care about it seeing as many people in a month as possible, performing as many surgeries as possible, and prescribing medications that are exorbent in price. It’s all about the almighty dollar, the more patients they see, the more surgeries, the more expensive meds, the more money for them. Sorry, but not happy with what’s become of medicine here anymore.

One measures an organization by it’s collective behavior, not just that of one person.
observer: in the case of the secret service and the prostitutes, there was way more than 1 person involved. not sure but how many were involved with hookers compaired to the amount stationed within 25 miles lets say?
Had a bad experience at a Mercy clinic this week. AFter waiting for over an hour in the waiting room for my appointment, when the nurse finally came to call me, I said what the heck is wrong with this place? An hour, really?? Her response was very snippy, she says “Would you like to be seen or not?” Unbelievable. When I go for my return appointment, it would be in her best interest not to be my nurse, if she even has a job by then. I will be making calls to her superiors.
They have been known to be rude there. New building but same old attitude. Let’s hope they are not texting on the job.
do you think it is the nurses fault that you had to wait so long? It seems to me that you should always expect to wait when you go see a specialist. If you make your appointment in the morning you don’t usually have such a long wait. Some doctors like to spend the needed time with their patients, not the 5 or 10 minutes aloted on the appointment sheet. I think that makes for a good doctor. I see no point in bitching at or trying to get the nurse fired. IT ISN’T HER (OR HIS) FAULT!!!!!!
There was absolutely no need for that nurse to be so rude. The doctor himself set this appointment with me by talking with me himself on the phone, and no it wasn’t with a specialist. The doctor apologized that his nurse didn’t come and get me since he was in with patients. So, yes it kind of is the nurses fault. You weren’t there, so how would you even know??
I imagine if she was rude as you say, it was because you were the umteenth patiant to bitch to her about something she had no control over. If that is your biggest complaint in life then you have it pretty good. Give the nurse a break, she was having a bad day just as you were. Let it go.
