Increased enforcement of traffic around school buses on the way

MASON CITY – In the near future, the Mason City Police Department will be partnering with the Mason City School District to look for violations such as the unsafe passing of a school bus law.  Over the course of the next couple of months, an officer will be periodically riding on the school bus with the driver and will notify other officers of any violators to have them stopped and cited.

The purpose of the project is to help bring awareness to this serious issue and hopefully increase the protection of children exiting and entering the school buses.

Drivers are reminded they cannot pass a school bus from behind and must reduce their speed to 25 mph when the bus’s amber lights are activated.  When the school bus’s red lights and stop sign are activated, other vehicles must come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion.
