Repeat sex offender gets probation for felony registry violation

MASON CITY – On Tuesday, October 25th, Shawn Holmes of 201 Virginia Street in Mesrvey was sentenced to a 5 year suspended prison, an additional 10 years on the sex offender registry, and 3 years of probation by Judge Bryan McKinley in Cerro Gordo County District Court after pleading guilty in August to 2nd offense sex offender registry violation a class D felony. Judge McKinley also ordered Holmes to pay the minimum $750 fine, $262.50 surcharge, and $351 in court costs.

Shawn Holmes is required to register as a sex offender after being convicted in Texas in two sex offences against minors. In 1997 Shawn was convicted of indecency with a child sexual contact with a victim under the age of 13 while being 21 years of age.

Two years later in 1999 Shawn Holmes was convicted in Texas at the age of 23 for aggravated sex assault / child with a victim age being 14 to 17.

Shawn Holmes moved to Mason City in June of this year and was arrested a few days later by Mason City police for 1st offence sex offender registry violation. In that case he entered a voluntary negotiated guilty plea and Judge Gregg Rosenblant sentenced him to seven days which he had already served before posting bond before court. Judge Rosenblant also ordered Holmes to pay $200 on court costs and suspended a minimum $625 fine.

Less than a month after being convicted of the 1st offense Shawn Holmes was arrested by Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department for 2nd offense sex offender registry violation.
