CLEAR LAKE, IOWA – On Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin will rise and shower all the good little boys and girls with presents. Well, OK, maybe not, but Furleigh Farms, owned by Bob and Donna Furleigh and located at 811 N. 56th Street in Clear Lake, offers just as much fun for all those good children and for the parents that like to see them smile.

Saturday, October 1st, Furleigh Farms, sometimes known as Furleigh Strawberry Fields or Furleigh Vegetables and Fruits, became Furleigh’s Pumpkin Patch and Haunted Corn Maze.

Talking with Donna, early Saturday morning, she said, “It’s a little cold, only thirty-two degrees, but it’s not windy. We have lots of pumpkins, plenty to go around.”

All summer long, the Furleigh’s are busy offering the public home grown fruits and vegetables, homemade canning and the fun of being able to pick your own strawberries. “You don’t realize how old and tired we are out here,” says Donna. Tired, yes, but as busy as they are, I wouldn’t call them old. They physically work just as hard as younger people.

Asking when a good time to come out would be, Donna replies, “Well, maybe in a couple hours, the 35 to 40 year old men come out here with their trucks and grab the big pumpkins. I don’t know what for.”

So, out we went, to the Pumpkin Patch, where we first met Josh and Tiffany Eklund and their 18 month old daughter, Haylee (pictured, right). They came to the Furleigh’s Pumpkin Patch from Garner. By this time, the sun was overhead, but it didn’t discourage Haylee none. She was wearing a cap to keep the sun out of her eyes so she could get a good look at all those pumpkins.

“This is so much fun,” says Josh. Tiffany was looking around and said to Haylee, “We need to pick a little one out for your baby brother, too.” Haylee looks at her mom and smiles.

We spotted the Kiddy Haunted Maze and couldn’t resist. We had to go. This is just an added incentive to to going to Furleigh’s Pumpkin Patch. The kids will enjoy walking through this. (See video, below.)

The Grey family showed up ready to pick out a pumpkin. Megan and Chris were walking around, with Chris, toting son Tristan, on his shoulders. Tristan really liked the big pumpkins. He sat proudly atop of one, while at the same time looking around for that one special pumpkin that he would take home.

The Grey family looked around a bit and found an area where there were some smaller pumpkins that Tristan could look at. We might have a winner. Megan helped get a nice little pumpkin for Tristan (pictured, right), and just when they thought it might be the one, Tristan rolled it out of her hand; he wanted to go back to the big pumpkins. In the end, Tristan was happy with the small pumpkin, sitting with his parents on top of the big ones.

All in all, the day was a good one at Furleigh’s Pumpkin Patch for the Eklund Family and the Grey family. The children got their special pumpkin and the parents got their special smiles, thanks to the time and effort of Bob and Donna Furleigh.
