Mason City man arrested on felony drug possession charge

Around 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 30th, a Cerro Gordo County deputy was assisted by two members of the Mason City police in a traffic contact in the 500 block of 1st Street SW.

As a result Seth Carolus, age 20, who resides at 2952 15th Street SW, Mason City, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense.

Seth Carolus was booked into Cerro Gordo County Jail following the arrest, and has since posted a $5000 cash or surety bond, pending further court proceedings. Possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense is a class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison and no more than a $7500 fine.

In March 2009 court records show Seth Carolus was arrested by Clear Lake police for possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of prescription. He received a deferred judgment on the marijuana charge and the unlawful possession of prescription was dismissed by the court.

In August 2009 court records show Seth Carolus was arrested by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s department for 3rd offense possession of methamphetamine. The charge was amended to 1st offense possession of a controlled substance and he was sentenced to 10 days in jail.

On January 14th, 2010 Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s department arrested Seth Carolus for 2nd offense possession of methamphetamine an aggravated misdemeanor.

The court upgraded the charge at conviction to possession of a controlled substance 3rd offence on April 5th, 2010. He was sentenced to 180 days in a residential treatment facility, a five year suspended prison sentence, and five years of probation with the Iowa Department of Corrections.

A probation revocation hearing is currently set for Oct 17th, 2011 at 9:20am in Cerro Gordo County District Court in that case.

On January 28th, 2010 Mason City Police arrested Seth Carolus for 3rd offense possession of methamphetamine. That case was dismissed according to court records after the defendant pled guilty to another charge.
